A safety valve, also known as an overflow valve, is a special valve in which the opening and closing components are in a normally closed state under external force. When the pressure of the medium inside the equipment or pipeline exceeds the specified value, the valve discharges the medium outside the system to prevent the pressure of the medium inside the pipeline or equipment from exceeding the specified value. Safety valves belong to the category of automatic valves, mainly used in boilers, pressure vessels, and pipelines to control pressure not exceeding the specified value, playing an important protective role in personal safety and equipment operation. The safety valve must undergo a pressure test before it can be used.

Several typical structural forms of safety valves. Figure A shows a piston type safety valve with a flat valve core. The air source pressure acts on piston A. When the pressure exceeds the safe value determined by the spring force, piston A is pushed open, and a portion of the compressed air is discharged into the atmosphere from the valve port; When the pressure of the gas source is lower than the safe value, the spring drives the piston to move downwards and close the valve port.

Ball valve and diaphragm safety valves work on the same principle as piston valves. These three types of safety valves are all controlled by springs, and adjusting the spring preload can change the safety value, so they are called direct acting safety valves.

Pilot operated safety valve provides control pressure on the diaphragm with a small direct acting valve. The hard core on the diaphragm is the valve core, which presses against the valve seat. When the air source pressure A is greater than the safety pressure, the valve core opens and compressed air is discharged into the atmosphere from the left output hole. Diaphragm safety valves and pilot operated safety valves have good pressure characteristics and sensitive actions; But the maximum opening force is relatively small, which means the flow characteristics are poor. In practical applications, the type of safety valve should be selected according to actual needs, and its diameter should be chosen based on the maximum exhaust volume.
