method
The type of usability testing this time is formative usability testing, which is usually conducted during the product design and development process to promptly correct issues and improve the usability of the product. Formative usability testing does not require testing in the real environment of device usage, but it requires recording of the device and location during testing. This test usedPortable usability laboratoryYou can bring it to the manufacturer's site for testing.
The human factors research tools used for testing mainly include a behavior observation record analysis system(The Observer XT)And eye tracker(Eye trackers.
The Observer XTyesProfessional behavior event recording software and data integration platform. Support encoding, decomposing event sequences, and integrating different data patterns for user behavior when using medical devices.

Wearable eye trackerIt can detect where the user is staring at at a certain time, how long they are staring, and the trajectory of their eye movements, in order to help the user recall the situation where the problem occurred during the post test interview. At the same time, we conducted on-site interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaire surveys, and other methods to gain a deeper understanding of patients' expectations and needs for insulin injection pens, as well as the difficulties and challenges in using insulin injection pens.

Through usability research, we found that overall, this insulin injection pen is easy to use. However, there are still some users who encounter usage errors or difficulties in certain stages of use, such as:
Users forget to tap the pen core or air injection during pre injection to prevent internal bubbles. They typed in the wrong place or didn't keep the pen holder vertical, or got the order of tapping and air injection wrong;
Sometimes the indicator lights and pointers are not clear, so users may mistakenly adjust the preset injection dose, especially for patients with visual impairments;
During injection, some users find it difficult to press the dose button with their thumb due to the pen being too long.

Based on these findings, we discussed with the client and listed the improvement directions for the product:
Important Information Reminder:Annotate warnings or reminders about air injection and pre injection on the pharmacy;
Protective measures:Suggest adding a magnifying glass on the dose indicator window and making the odd pointer and even pointer lengths different;
Inherent safety design:Use anti slip finger grooves to maintain good friction when pressing the dosage button firmly.
