Iba1 (Ionized calcium binding adapter molecule 1) is a calcium binding protein with a molecular weight of approximately 17 kDa. Due to the specific expression of Iba1 in microglia in the central nervous system1)Therefore, it is used as a marker for microglia cells. According to reports, Iba1 is expressed in both resting and activated microglia, but there are reports that its expression increases in activated microglia2)In addition, Iba1 is also expressed in macrophages of peripheral tissues, known as AIF-1 (Allograft Inflammatory Factor 1, Allograft inflammatory factor-1)。 Iba1 binds to F-actin inside cells and plays a role in forming actin fiber bundles. The formation of this actin fiber bundle is considered necessary for observing the formation of cell membrane wave structures during cell migration and phagocytosis processes3).

Anti Iba1, derived from rabbits (for immunohistochemistry), can be used to stain microglia, including processes, in immunohistochemical staining. Therefore, it has been used by researchers around the world as a standard for labeling antibodies against microglia.

In recent years, microglia have attracted much attention due to their neurotrophic and protective effects, as well as their neuroprotective effects caused by the production of NO, TNF - α, and IL-1 β.

◆ Characteristics


In immunohistochemical staining (frozen sections), microglia including their processes can be stained

The concentration used is 1:500-1:1000, and it can also be used in small amounts for staining.
