Supercritical fluids have gas like diffusivity and liquid solubility, as well as low viscosity and surface tension, allowing them to rapidly penetrate into micropores. Therefore, the extraction/drying speed is faster and more effective than that of liquids, especially the solubility can vary with temperature, pressure, and polarity.
In the traditional drying method, the liquid is directly converted into gas under high temperature conditions, which will produce a certain amount of surface tension change, and may damage the fine structure of the sample. For special samples, such as sol gel, biological samples, porous materials with unstable structure, etc., the sample structure will be damaged if pretreated by the traditional drying method. In the critical point drying method, the medium adopts a phase transition method of liquid carbon dioxide supercritical carbon dioxide gaseous carbon dioxide, which reduces the surface stress at the interface to zero and preserves the fine structure of the sample.
