Induction hardening is a mature technology that can improve the load resistance of components such as bearings, gears, and rollers, and protect surfaces from wear. The hardening process is carried out by induction heating the near surface area above the austenitization temperature and subsequent water cooling. This usually produces a martensitic microstructure with appropriate hardness and strength near the surface, which is separated from the lower hardness but tough substrate by a transition zone. The hardening depth is defined as the distance from the surface when the hardness is lower than the given level defined by the relevant application standards.
