Overview

The original design intention of Freeman FT4 is to characterize the rheological properties of powders (i.e. powder flowability). This is still its main function, but instruments, accessories, and methods are constantly evolving, and now FT4 has become a universal powder flow tester.

The FT4 powder tester has many unique features. Here are some key characteristics for evaluating industrial value:

  • Capable of simulating powder processing conditions (by testing samples under solidification, moderate stress, inflation, or fluidization conditions)
  • Applying multi-faceted powder characterization techniques to evaluate dynamic powder flow, stacking, and shear characteristics, in order to construct a complete powder behavior model
  • Sensitivity to distinguish differences in similar powders that cannot be distinguished by other testing instruments

Freeman Technology is the developer of the FT4 powder rheometer in the industry and became a member of the Mack Instrument family in 2018. In 2025, Mack Instruments and Freeman will join Malvern Panalytical to bring powder flow expertise into a broader portfolio of material characterization products.

Powder rheometer methodology

FT4 is a truly universal powder flow tester that provides four types of methods: powder macroscopic characteristic analysis, dynamic flow analysis, shear testing (in accordance with ASTM D7981 standard), and process simulation testing.

  • volumeDensity, compressibility, permeability
  • Dynamic FlowBasic fluidity, aeration, consolidation, flow rate, specific energy
  • cut: Shear unit, wall friction
  • processSeparation, grinding, clumping, static electricity, moisture, agglomeration

application

In both wet and dry processes, the powder behavior characteristics can affect the manufacturing of electrodes. In wet processes, powders with fluidity and dispersibility can ensure consistency of the slurry, thereby improving battery performance and production efficiency.

Additive manufacturing (AM) relies on precise powder properties to ensure consistency and quality of 3D printed parts. Effective powder spreading and distribution are crucial, as their unevenness may lead to defects such as inconsistent density and poor surface finish.

Powder coating is environmentally friendly because it does not require the use of solvents and does not produce volatile organic compound emissions. However, due to the need for smooth powder flow, the application of powder coatings also faces challenges, especially in situations where the demand for ultra-thin film layers forces particle size reduction and enhances inter particle forces.

Powder processing involves various conditions, including high concentration stress in the hopper and dynamic fluidization. Understanding the behavior of materials under these conditions is crucial for designing and monitoring unit operations and conveying systems.

The toner formula is usually proprietary and ground into fine powder with a particle size of less than 10 microns, which makes them easy to bond and aggregate. Good powder flowability is crucial for ensuring uniform powder dispersion and effective adhesion to paper, and the use of additives can prevent clumping and improve performance.

Cosmetic powder boxes are made by mixing moisturizers, pigments, fillers, and adhesives, and must have good powder flowability to be effectively processed. Good liquidity can ensure stable product quality, smooth application process, and achieve economical production under high output.

The dry powder pressing process has become the mainstream technology for ceramic component molding due to its flexibility and cost advantages. Determining appropriate powder mixtures and characterization methods is crucial for effective process development.

Understanding powder properties and flow characteristics is crucial for efficient processing in the food and health products industry. Even a small amount of moisture can have a serious impact on the powder, causing it to transform from a free flowing state into clumps or solid blocks, thereby affecting fluidity, resulting in reduced efficiency and increased costs.

Powder processing is crucial in pharmaceutical production, as controlling powder behavior can improve efficiency and quality. The key processes include wet granulation to generate uniform and freely flowing particles, mold filling, predicting flow performance in spiral feeders, and developing dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulations.
