Working principle
Reagent composition: Karl Fischer reagent is mainly composed of iodine, sulfur dioxide, organic bases (such as pyridine), and solvents (such as methanol). Among them, iodine and sulfur dioxide are responsible for reacting with water, while organic bases act as catalysts and solvents to ensure the smooth progress of the reaction.
Reaction process: When the water in the sample comes into contact with Karl Fischer reagent, the water will undergo a quantitative reaction with iodine and sulfur dioxide in the reagent, producing pyridine iodide and pyridine bisulfite. This reaction is quantitative, meaning that one mole of iodine is consumed per mole of water molecule. In order to make the reaction proceed to the right, anhydrous pyridine is usually added to absorb the generated sulfurous acid, ultimately forming a stable product.
Titration process: Introduce the sample to be tested into the titration cell and ensure that the sample is thoroughly mixed with Karl Fischer reagent using a stirrer. The titration pump automatically adds Karl Fischer reagent to the titration cell until the water reaction is complete. This process is monitored in real-time by a potential measurement system. When the titration endpoint is reached (i.e. the water reaction is complete and there is no remaining iodine), the potential suddenly changes and the instrument stops titration.
Electricity measurement and data analysis: The built-in electrode system of the instrument detects the changes in electricity generated by the reaction, thereby calculating the moisture content in the sample. The instrument outputs the measurement results in digital form, allowing operators to easily read and record the data.
