Full analysis of Karl Fischer moisture analyzer technology: in-depth exploration from principle to practical operation
Date: 2025-08-05Read: 0
1、 Technical principle: Accurate measurement of chemical reactions
The core principle of the Karl Fischer moisture analyzer is based on the quantitative chemical reaction of iodine and sulfur dioxide with water in the presence of pyridine and methanol. When the Karl Fischer reagent (containing iodine, sulfur dioxide, pyridine, and methanol) comes into contact with water in the sample, an oxidation-reduction reaction occurs, producing substances such as methyl pyridine sulfate. The consumption of iodine is proportional to the water content. By measuring the consumption of iodine or the amount of electricity consumed during the electrolysis process (Coulomb method), the moisture content of the sample can be accurately calculated. The Coulomb method uses an electrolytic cell to continuously generate iodine until the water is depleted. According to Faraday's law of electrolysis, the amount of electrolysis is proportional to the number of water molecules, resulting in higher accuracy and stronger automation.
2、 Operation process: Standardization and detail control
Power on and self check: Check the connections of the pipelines, reagent bottles, and solvent bottles to ensure sufficient Karl Fischer reagent and anhydrous methanol. After turning on, enter the operator number and the instrument will perform a self-test to enter the main menu.
Preprocessing:
Solvent absorption: Inject methanol into the reaction cup, and immerse the electrode platinum plate and titration head in the liquid level.
Cleaning burette: Remove air from the measuring tube and fill it with reagents through the "return liquid suction" cycle.
Blank titration: Pre titration removes moisture from the reaction cup to ensure baseline stability.
Calibration and measurement:
Reagent calibration: Use pure water or standard solution to calibrate the titration degree, repeat 2-4 times, and take the average value.
Sample determination: After adding the sample, enter the number and weight, and the instrument will automatically titrate and display the result.
End processing: Drain the waste liquid, soak the electrode in methanol, and turn off the power.
3、 Application scenario: Water control tool for multiple industries
The Karl Fischer moisture analyzer is widely used in fields such as petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical, and food
Petrochemical industry: Determine the moisture content of crude oil, diesel, resin, etc. to ensure product quality.
Pharmaceutical industry: Testing the moisture content of raw materials, capsules, tablets, etc. to meet GMP requirements.
In the food industry, measuring trace amounts of moisture in bread, candy, dairy products, etc. to ensure shelf life stability.
Power industry: Monitor transformer oil moisture and prevent equipment failures.
4、 Technical advantages: precision, efficiency, and automation
High precision: The Coulomb method has an accuracy of up to μ g, while the volumetric method is suitable for constant analysis.
Automation: Built in automatic liquid addition, discharge, and cleaning units, supporting automatic sample recognition and electrolysis.
Intelligence: touch screen operation, data storage and statistical analysis, in compliance with GLP/GMP standards.
Multifunctionality: Supports gas, liquid, and solid sample detection to meet the needs of different industries.
