Scientific maintenance of quartz volumetric flasks is the key to ensuring accurate and reliable experimental data
Date: 2025-10-20Read: 0

Quartz volumetric flask is a high-precision glassware used in laboratories for precise preparation of standard solutions, dilution of samples, and quantitative analysis. Due to its excellent high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and low thermal expansion coefficient characteristics, it is widely used in analytical fields such as ICP-MS, atomic absorption, and semiconductor material preparation. Although quartz material has good performance, it is also delicate and vulnerable. Improper use or neglect of maintenance can lead to blurry markings, scratches or even ruptures on the bottle body, affecting volume accuracy and service life. Mastering scientific maintenance methods is the key to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of experimental data.

1、 Clean immediately after daily use
After each use, immediately pour out the residual liquid to avoid solute crystallization or organic matter drying up and adhering. Rinse the inner wall with deionized water initially, and then select a cleaning agent based on the properties of the residue:
Inorganic salts: Soak in 1:1 nitric acid for several hours.
Organic matter: Soak in chromic acid solution, alkaline detergent, or specialized organic solvents (such as acetone).
Biological residues: Disinfect with protease solution or 75% ethanol.
Use a soft bristled brush during cleaning, and strictly prohibit the use of hard metal brushes or abrasive cleaners to prevent scratching the inner wall.
2、 Deep cleaning and stain treatment
For stubborn stains or slight scaling, an ultrasonic cleaning device can be used as an aid, with a time control of 10-20 minutes to avoid long-term vibration damage to the bottle body. If there is slight atomization or calcium spots, dilute hydrochloric acid (5% -10%) can be used for short-term soaking and then rinsed. It is strictly prohibited to use hydrofluoric acid (HF) as it can severely corrode quartz.
3、 Drying and Storage Standards
After cleaning, rinse with deionized water three times, invert and dry on a dedicated glassware rack to prevent dust from falling in. If necessary, clean air or nitrogen can be used to blow dry. Do not bake at high temperatures to avoid stress rupture caused by local overheating. When stored for a long time, the bottle mouth should be covered with a dust cover or wrapped with a clean sealing film, and placed in a dry, dark, and shockproof cabinet to avoid collision with other hard objects.
4、 Regular inspection and status assessment
Check the bottle body once a month for cracks, gaps, or worn markings. Focus on observing whether the connection between the bottleneck and the bottle body, as well as the thread of the bottle mouth (such as the GL45 interface), are intact. If small cracks or blurry markings are found, they should be immediately stopped to prevent cracking or volume misalignment.
5、 Avoid incorrect operation and environment
Sudden temperature change: It is forbidden to pour high-temperature solutions directly into room temperature quartz bottles. They should be gradually preheated or cooled, and the temperature difference should not exceed 100 ℃.
Mechanical impact: Handle gently and avoid hitting the bottle mouth or bottom.
Pressure risk: It is strictly prohibited to use sealed heating or pressurization to prevent bursting.
