The purpose, common faults and treatment methods of micro bioreactors
Date: 2025-09-02Read: 2
Micro bioreactorMicro scale Bioreactor is an important tool in the fields of biotechnology and pharmaceutical research and development in recent years. It simulates the growth environment of cells or microorganisms in small-scale systems ranging from microliters to several liters, achieving precise control and efficient research of biological processes. Its small size, high degree of automation, short experimental cycle, and low reagent consumption make it play an irreplaceable role in modern biotechnology research.
1、 The main uses of microbioreactors
High throughput process development: In the development of new drugs or production of biological products, researchers need to screen a large number of strains or optimize cultivation conditions. Micro bioreactors can run multiple independent reaction units in parallel, quickly evaluating the effects of different parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and feeding strategies, significantly improving research and development efficiency.
Cell culture and metabolic research: widely used in the cultivation of mammalian cells, yeast, bacteria, etc., for studying cell growth kinetics, metabolic pathways, product expression levels, etc., providing data support for large-scale production.
Pre experiment before process amplification: Before scaling up laboratory results to pilot or industrial production, microreactors can serve as a "bridge" to verify the scalability of the process and reduce risks and costs during the amplification process.
Education and Training: Due to its easy operation and high safety, micro bioreactors are also commonly used in teaching experiments in universities and research institutions to help students understand the basic principles of biological reaction processes.
2、 Common types of faults in use
Despite the maturity of micro bioreactor technology, the following typical faults may still be encountered in practical operation:
Sensor malfunction: pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature and other sensors are the core components of the reactor. Common issues include reading drift, slow response, or complete failure, leading to inaccurate control.
Abnormal stirring system: Microreactors often use magnetic stirring or overhead stirring. The malfunction manifests as unstable stirring speed, detachment of the stirring element, or overheating of the motor, which affects the mixing effect and mass transfer efficiency.
Gas supply issues: Blockage of ventilation system, malfunction of gas flow meter, or incorrect gas mixing ratio can lead to insufficient dissolved oxygen or pH fluctuations, affecting cell growth.
Pollution issue: Despite the closed design of the system, if sterilization is not thorough or improper operation is carried out, bacterial or fungal contamination may still occur, leading to experimental failure.
Software and control system failures: data acquisition interruptions, control instruction delays, or software crashes that affect the continuity and reliability of experiments.
3、 Fault handling and preventive measures
Sensor maintenance: Regularly calibrate pH and DO sensors, clean and store them properly after use. When abnormal readings are found, they should be replaced or recalibrated immediately.
Mixing system inspection: Ensure that the mixing device is securely installed, and regularly inspect the motor and transmission components. Avoid prolonged overspeed operation.
Gas system inspection: Regularly check whether the gas path is blocked and whether the filter needs to be replaced to ensure the purity of the gas.
Strict sterilization operation: All components must be sterilized under high pressure before use, and the operation process follows aseptic standards.
Software backup and update: Regularly backup experimental data, keep the control system software at the latest version, and avoid compatibility issues.
In short, microreactors are the "accelerators" of modern biotechnology research and development. Through scientific operation, regular maintenance, and timely troubleshooting, its performance can be maximized to ensure the smooth progress of experiments.
