Merck China wins the "China Enterprise Carbon Neutrality Performance List - Carbon Neutrality Ecological Construction Award" from First Financial

On April 22, the 55th World Earth Day, First Financial announced the "2nd China Corporate Carbon Neutrality Performance List", and Merck China was awarded the "Carbon Neutrality Ecological Construction Award". This list is jointly initiated by First Financial, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Carbon Neutral Development Research Institute, and Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange. The annual theme of this year's selection is "From 0 to 1, Towards Carbon Neutrality and High Quality Development", which aims to discover and commend enterprises that have made outstanding contributions to carbon neutrality and high-quality development, and encourage more enterprises to actively participate in carbon reduction and sustainable development practices, jointly promoting the process of dual carbon economy and high-quality development.

Merck China President He Muqi stated that at Merck, sustainable development is not just a social responsibility, but a business necessity. But we realize that integrating sustainable development into every aspect of our business is still far from enough. We must do more work to help our customers, partners, suppliers, and industry peers advance their own sustainable development goals. We take the following measures to make it a reality:

1) To ensure that sustainability is fully integrated into our value chain, we are increasing transparency in the performance of our global suppliers. Two thirds of relevant suppliers worldwide have now undergone effective sustainability assessments, a significant increase compared to the previous year. In addition, we will incorporate the main emission data of service providers (Scope 3.1) into our calculation method in 2023.

2) Merck is strengthening our focus on creating sustainable innovation and technology for our customers. For example, in the field of life sciences, our green alternative product portfolio increased to 2500 products in 2023, a 34% increase from the previous year.

3) Merck is working closely with our peers and partners, participating in groups including the Sustainable Market Initiative Health Systems Working Group, to harness our collective power and accelerate sustainable change across the industry.
