Working principle and application analysis of rotary evaporator
Date: 2025-11-05Read: 18
Rotary evaporator is a common laboratory equipment widely used for solvent evaporation and concentration in fields such as chemistry, pharmaceuticals, food, and environmental analysis. Its main function is to accelerate the evaporation process of solvents through rotation and heating, thereby effectively separating solvents from solutes. Usually used for mild evaporation of solvents that are not resistant to high temperatures, to avoid damage to the sample due to high temperatures, and to efficiently and uniformly complete the evaporation process.
1、 Working principle
Rotary evaporatorThe working principle of the solvent is based on the principle of evaporation, mainly by heating and rotating to reduce the evaporation temperature of the solvent, so that the solvent evaporates rapidly at a lower temperature. Its main components include a rotating host, a heating bath, a condenser, and a collection bottle.
1. Rotation and Heating: The sample bottle is installed on a rotating host and can rotate at a certain speed. The rotational motion increases the surface area of the solvent, making its contact with air more complete and accelerating the evaporation of the solvent. Meanwhile, the sample bottle is usually placed in a heating bath, which can provide stable heat to reach the appropriate evaporation temperature of the solvent. The control of heating temperature is very important, as excessively high temperatures may cause the decomposition or loss of target substances in the sample, while excessively low temperatures can affect evaporation efficiency.
2. Vacuum environment: In order to reduce the boiling point of solvents, a vacuum environment is usually established during the operation process. By reducing the pressure of the system, the solvent can reach boiling state at lower temperatures, thereby reducing the risk of chemical reactions or material damage caused by high temperatures. A vacuum system typically includes a vacuum pump and a vacuum regulating device, which can precisely control the pressure inside the system.
3. Condensation and collection: The evaporated solvent vapor is rapidly cooled and condensed back into a liquid state through a condenser connected to the rotating bottle mouth. The condenser usually has coolant circulating inside, which rapidly cools and collects the vapor through heat exchange. The condensed solvent liquid enters the collection bottle, which is usually made of pressure resistant and chemically corrosion-resistant materials.

2、 Main applications
Rotary evaporators are widely used in various fields in laboratories, including:
1. Solvent recovery and concentration: widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical experiments to remove solvents from solutions. By adjusting the temperature and vacuum degree, researchers can quickly evaporate the solvent at low temperatures, thereby concentrating the target substance. This process can efficiently remove solvents without damaging thermosensitive substances, and is widely used in organic synthesis, extraction, and separation processes.
2. Solvent purification: It can also be used for solvent purification. Through the process of evaporation and condensation, pure solvents or solutes can be separated from mixtures, especially suitable for solvent removal in complex solutions. After the organic synthesis reaction, the unreacted solvent and by-products can be evaporated and recovered, greatly improving the economic and environmental efficiency of the experiment.
3. Drug development: In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used for the extraction, concentration, and solvent recovery of drug ingredients. During the drug development process, multiple solvent evaporation and separation are required to effectively control temperature and pressure, prevent drug components from being damaged by high temperatures, and ensure that the active ingredients of the drug are retained.
4. Food industry: In the field of food, it is used to extract plant essential oils, natural flavors, and other substances. Due to the fact that most of these natural substances contain volatile components and are easily degraded by heat, they need to be evaporated and concentrated under low temperature conditions. It can also effectively avoid the damage of high temperature to food ingredients and help obtain pure food ingredients.
The rotary evaporator is one of the very important equipment in the laboratory, which can effectively achieve solvent evaporation, concentration, and recovery. It has become an important tool in fields such as chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and food due to its advantages of low-temperature operation, efficient evaporation, and simple operation. With the advancement of technology, its accuracy and functionality will be further improved, and its application scope will be more extensive.
