Why conduct high-temperature dielectric temperature spectrum testing?
Date: 2025-07-22Read: 1
High temperature dielectric spectroscopy testing plays an indispensable role in many fields such as materials science research, electronics industry, energy, etc., thanks to its deep insight into the high-temperature characteristics of materials, accurate evaluation of performance, and non-destructive advantages. It helps researchers and engineers better grasp the behavioral mysteries of materials in high-temperature environments, and further promotes innovation and development of related technologies. It can measure the dielectric properties of materials at different temperatures, and then study the structure and properties of materials. The following are the measurement steps and usage precautions:
-Choose appropriate testing equipment and fixtures, such as high-temperature thermostats, dielectric testing fixtures, LCR impedance analyzers, etc.
-Pre treat the sample, such as cleaning, drying, etc., to ensure that the surface of the sample is clean and free of impurities.
-Connect the high-temperature dielectric test fixture to the LCR impedance analyzer using a test cable to ensure reliable connection.
-Perform open and short circuit calibration to ensure that the testing fixture matches the LCR instrument during testing and avoid testing data errors.
-Place the processed sample between the upper and lower electrodes of the dielectric testing fixture to ensure good contact between the sample and the electrode.
-Place the test fixture into the high-temperature thermostat, set the target temperature, and start heating.
-After the sample reaches the set temperature and stabilizes, start the LCR impedance analyzer for testing.
-Measure and record the voltage and current signals of the sample at different temperature points, and calculate parameters such as dielectric constant and dielectric loss through the control unit.
-Import test data into a computer and use specialized software for processing and analysis.
-Draw a dielectric temperature spectrum and observe the variation of material dielectric properties with temperature.
-After the test is completed, turn off the high-temperature thermostat and LCR impedance analyzer and other equipment.
-Clean the testing fixtures and samples, and prepare for the next test.

Advantages of high-temperature dielectric temperature spectrum testing:
(1) Deeply understand the high-temperature characteristics of materials
1. Revealing microstructural changes
-High temperature environments can cause significant changes in the microstructure of materials, such as increased lattice vibrations, enhanced molecular thermal motion, and defect diffusion. Dielectric thermography is highly sensitive to these microstructural changes. For example, in some ceramic materials, as the temperature increases, the movement and redistribution of lattice defects can affect the polarization state of the material, resulting in characteristic changes in the dielectric temperature spectrum. By analyzing these changes, we can gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of the microstructure of materials at high temperatures, providing a basis for optimizing material design.
2. Study the phase transition process
-Many materials undergo phase transitions at high temperatures, such as the paraelectric phase transition of ferroelectrics and the solid-liquid phase transition of certain alloys. During the phase transition process, the dielectric properties of the material undergo a sudden change. High temperature dielectric spectroscopy testing can accurately capture these phase transition points. By observing the abnormal changes in dielectric constant and loss tangent near the phase transition temperature, the phase transition temperature can be determined, and the dielectric relaxation behavior during the phase transition process can be studied. This is crucial for understanding the phase transition mechanism of materials.
(2) Accurate evaluation of material properties
1. Wide temperature range applicability
-This test can be conducted over a wide temperature range, from room temperature all the way to the melting point of the material or higher. This enables it to evaluate the dielectric properties of materials in different high-temperature environments, which is of great significance for the performance evaluation of materials used in high-temperature conditions, such as thermal protection materials in the aerospace industry and high-temperature insulation materials in the energy industry.
2. Multi parameter comprehensive analysis
-In addition to dielectric constant and loss tangent, other relevant parameters such as dielectric relaxation time and activation energy can also be obtained through further processing of test data. The comprehensive analysis of these parameters can describe the dielectric properties of materials, providing more accurate information for quality control and performance prediction of materials.
