Installation, testing, and operation of a pilot freeze-drying machine
Date: 2025-07-22Read: 1
The pilot freeze-drying machine is a device used in the laboratory research and development stage for small-scale freeze-drying experiments, widely used in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. Its main function is to dehydrate materials through a low-temperature vacuum environment, maintaining their stability and activity for a longer period of time. The following is the basic process of installation, testing, and operation of a pilot freeze-drying machine:
1、 Installation
Choose the appropriate installation location
Ensure that the installation location of the equipment is well ventilated, avoiding direct sunlight and moisture.
Choose a stable and flat ground to ensure the stable operation of the equipment.
The installation location should have sufficient space for easy operation and maintenance.
Check the equipment
Open the packaging box and check if the freeze dryer is intact and if the equipment accessories are complete.
Check for any transportation damage to the various components of the freeze dryer, such as the cold trap, freezer, vacuum pump, control panel, etc.
connected device
Power connection: Ensure that the power connection of the freeze-drying machine meets the electrical requirements of the equipment. Generally speaking, pilot freeze-drying machines require a separate power supply to ensure stable voltage, current, and frequency.
Freezing system connection: Check if the connection of the refrigeration system (such as the cold trap) is tight and there is no air leakage. Confirm if the refrigerant is sufficient.
Vacuum system connection: The vacuum pump needs to be connected to the equipment, and the vacuum pipeline should be checked for leaks to ensure that the vacuum system can pump air normally.
Cold trap preparation
Add cooling medium (such as liquid nitrogen or dry ice) into the equipment's cold trap and ensure that it is at an appropriate low temperature to effectively capture moisture during the freeze-drying process.
Control panel debugging
Check the connection and display function of the control panel to ensure that all control buttons, displays, alarm systems, etc. are working properly.
2、 Testing
Power on preheating
Start the device and perform a preliminary self check. Ensure that all systems (such as refrigeration system, vacuum system, heating system) are functioning properly.
Set and run the preheating program of the equipment through the control panel to ensure that the freeze dryer can reach the set working temperature.
Vacuum testing
Turn on the vacuum pump and observe whether the vacuum degree meets the standard required by the equipment. Ensure that the vacuum pump can effectively extract air from the equipment and maintain a vacuum state.
If the equipment cannot reach the predetermined vacuum level, it is necessary to check the performance of the vacuum pump or whether there are leaks in the vacuum pipeline.
Temperature test
The temperature of the freezer and heating plate should gradually increase to ensure that they can reach the set temperature and maintain stability. Temperature can be monitored through the control panel.
Check whether the heating plate is uniformly heated through the temperature control system to ensure that the freezing and drying process is not affected by uneven temperature.
Cold trap temperature test
A cold trap is a place where water vapor is collected during the freeze-drying process, ensuring that the temperature of the cold trap is low enough to effectively capture moisture.
System check
Start the entire freeze-drying process and check the performance of the equipment during initial operation, such as freezing time, vacuum pressure, temperature fluctuations, etc.
3、 Operation
Prepare freeze-dried materials
Prepare material samples according to the specifications of the freeze dryer. Common freeze-dried materials include drugs, food, cosmetics, etc.
Ensure that the samples are evenly distributed on the freeze-drying tray or pallet to avoid excessive layering affecting the freeze-drying effect.
Set up freeze-drying program
Set temperature, pressure, and time parameters for the freezing and drying stages based on the characteristics of the material.
Freezing stage: Reduce the temperature of the material to a specified low temperature range to ensure that the material is in a frozen state.
Drying stage: Start raising the temperature and controlling the vacuum pressure to allow water to sublime directly from the solid state to the gas state.
Start the freeze dryer
According to the control panel of the device, start the preset freeze-drying program.
Observe whether various parameters (such as temperature and vacuum degree) remain stable during the operation of the equipment, and make minor adjustments if necessary.
Monitor the freeze-drying process
During the freeze-drying process, regularly check the temperature, vacuum degree, and humidity changes to ensure that all parameters of the equipment are within a safe range.
Real time monitoring of the freeze-drying process to ensure a stable operating environment and avoid adverse effects on the sample.
End the freeze-drying process
After completing the freeze-drying process, the equipment will issue a prompt indicating that the freeze-drying has been completed.
Stop the operation of the freeze dryer and turn off equipment such as vacuum pumps and freezers.
Take out the sample
After the freeze-drying process is completed, carefully remove the freeze-dried sample. At this point, the sample should maintain its original form, but its moisture content is already very low, making it suitable for long-term storage.
Cleaning and maintenance
After each use, be sure to clean the equipment, especially the freeze-drying tray, cold trap, and vacuum pump components. Regularly check the operating status of the equipment to ensure its long-term normal operation.
Clean the vacuum pipeline and cooling system to prevent material residue from causing damage to the equipment.
4、 Common problems and solutions
Unstable vacuum degree:
Check if the vacuum pump is working properly, ensuring that the pipeline is leak free and tightly connected.
Regularly clean the vacuum pump and pipelines to prevent dust or impurities from affecting the vacuum degree.
The freeze-drying process takes too long:
Check if the temperature setting is appropriate to ensure proper temperature control during freezing and drying processes.
Ensure that the heating plate of the freeze dryer is evenly heated and there is no local overheating or undercooling.
Uneven freeze-dried materials:
Ensure that the material samples are evenly distributed on the freeze-drying tray to avoid excessive accumulation.
Adjust the temperature and vacuum settings of the freeze-drying machine to ensure uniform freeze-drying of the sample.
Through strict installation and debugging, scientific operation procedures, and regular maintenance, the efficient and stable operation of the pilot freeze-drying machine can be ensured, achieving the best freeze-drying effect.
