What are the characteristics of photoelectrochemical electrolytic cells compared to ordinary electrolytic cells
Date: 2025-08-26Read: 1
Photoelectrochemical electrolytic cellIt is a device that directly converts light energy into chemical energy, and its core feature is to use semiconductor photoelectrode materials (such as TiO ₂, WO ∝, etc.) to absorb photons and excite electron hole pairs, driving electrochemical reactions (such as water splitting and CO ₂ reduction) without the need for external electrical energy input.
Key components:
Photoelectrode: An electrode composed of semiconductor materials that combines light absorption and electrocatalytic functions.
Electrolyte solution/molten electrolyte: provides an ion transport medium.
Electrode (cathode): usually an inert material (such as Pt), used to complete half reactions.
Comparison of core advantages between photoelectrochemical electrolytic cells and conventional electrolytic cells:
Direct light energy conversion:
The photoelectrochemical electrolysis cell directly absorbs light energy through semiconductor photoelectrodes (such as TiO ₂, WO ∝) to excite electron hole pairs, driving water splitting reactions without the need for additional electrical energy input.
Ordinary electrolytic cells rely on external power supply, resulting in energy conversion losses (such as electrolytic cell resistance losses).
Potential for efficiency improvement:
The current efficiency of photoelectrochemical cells is close to 10%, which can be further improved by optimizing the photoelectrode materials (such as perovskite) and reaction conditions (such as pressure regulation).
Simplify the system structure:
The photoelectrochemical electrolytic cell integrates light absorption and electrocatalytic functions into a single electrode, eliminating the coupling equipment between photovoltaic cells and electrolytic cells.
Ordinary electrolytic cells require independent configuration of power supply, electrolytic cell, and gas separation device.
Material cost control:
Photoelectrochemical cells can use inexpensive catalysts (such as nickel iron oxide) to reduce dependence on precious metals.
Ordinary electrolytic cells (such as PEM) require a large amount of platinum group metal catalysts, which are costly.
