Quartz oscillation microbalance: a "multi scenario application expert" for micro quality analysis
Date: 2025-08-12Read: 0
The demand for quantitative analysis and dynamic monitoring of trace substances is increasing in fields such as chemical analysis, biomedicine, and food testing. Quartz oscillating microbalance, with its simple structure and fast response, has become a flexible detection tool suitable for multiple scenarios and is widely used in laboratory research and on-site rapid analysis.
In chemical reaction monitoring,Quartz oscillating microbalanceIt is a "real-time tracker" that reflects the process. In catalytic reaction research, catalysts are fixed on the surface of quartz crystals, and the mechanism of catalytic active sites is analyzed by monitoring the mass changes of adsorbed species on the surface during the reaction process. For example, in carbon monoxide oxidation reaction, the dynamic equilibrium between reactant adsorption and product desorption can be observed in real time. In the monitoring of precipitation reactions in solution, QCM can capture the formation and growth process of nanoparticles, calculate the growth rate of particles through frequency variation curves, and provide experimental basis for the controllable synthesis of nanomaterials. It has strong adaptability to temperature and pressure, and can conduct experiments under non ideal conditions, expanding the scope of research.

In biomedical testing, this device is used for rapid analysis of biomolecules. In clinical diagnosis, the quartz oscillating microbalance is used to detect tumor markers in blood by modifying the surface with antibodies to specifically bind to antigens. The frequency change is linearly related to the antigen concentration, and the detection time is only 20 minutes, without the need for complex sample pretreatment, making it suitable for use in primary healthcare institutions. In cell adhesion research, QCM can monitor the adhesion strength and dynamic changes of cells on material surfaces in real time, evaluate the cell compatibility of biomaterials, and provide reference for tissue engineering scaffold design. Its low-cost characteristics enable conventional laboratories to conduct high-precision biological analysis.
Quartz oscillating microbalance assists in quality control in food and agricultural product testing. In food freshness testing, QCM surface modified sensitive film is used to detect spoilage gases in meat and fish. The freshness level is evaluated through quality changes, and the consistency with traditional sensory evaluation is over 90%, which can replace manual testing. In pesticide residue detection, antigen antibody specific reaction can be used to quickly detect organophosphorus pesticides on the surface of fruits and vegetables, with a detection limit as low as 0.01mg/kg, meeting food safety standards. In the detection of antibiotic residues in dairy products, QCM can complete the detection within 15 minutes, which is suitable for online monitoring of production lines and avoids unqualified products from entering the market.
In industrial quality control, quartz oscillating microbalance is used for quality inspection of thin films and coatings. In the production of electronic components, the uniformity of photoresist coating is monitored, and the coating effect is judged by the quality differences at different positions to ensure lithography accuracy. In the barrier performance testing of packaging materials, QCM can evaluate the permeation rate of films for oxygen and water vapor, providing data support for the shelf life design of food packaging. It is easy to operate and can be used by ordinary laboratory personnel after simple training, reducing the technical threshold for high-precision detection and becoming a practical tool in industrial quality inspection.
