The function and function of electronic load meter
Date: 2025-12-17Read: 30

Electronic load meter is a testing device used to simulate actual load conditions. Its core function is to comprehensively test and verify the performance of power equipment (such as switching power supplies, adapters, batteries, UPS, etc.) by accurately controlling current, voltage, and power parameters. It can simulate the dynamic changes of real loads, helping engineers evaluate the stability, efficiency, protection function, and dynamic response capability of the power supply, thereby ensuring the reliability of the product under various working conditions.

1、 The core function of electronic load meter

  • Constant current (CC) modeIn constant current mode, the electronic load meter can stably absorb the specified current value, regardless of changes in input voltage. This function is suitable for testing the overcurrent protection, output capability, and efficiency curve of the power supply. For example, when testing a 12V/5A power adapter, you can observe whether the voltage is stable within the range of 12V ± 5% by setting the 5A constant current mode.

  • Constant Voltage (CV) ModeIn constant voltage mode, the electronic load meter maintains a constant input voltage and adjusts the absorption current according to the set voltage value. This mode is commonly used to test the charging characteristics of batteries or the output voltage stability of power sources. For example, when testing lithium battery charging, a 4.2V constant voltage mode can be set to observe the change of charging current with the battery state.

  • Constant Resistance (CR) modeBy simulating a fixed resistance value, the electronic load tester can test the output characteristics of the power supply under different loads. For example, by setting a 10 Ω resistor mode, the voltage and current changes of the power supply under a 10 Ω load can be observed to verify its linear adjustment rate.

  • Constant power (CP) modeIn constant power mode, the electronic load meter maintains a constant absorbed power, which is suitable for testing the power output capability and overload protection of the power supply. For example, setting a 60W constant power mode can test the performance of the power supply under full load or overload conditions.

  • Dynamic testing functionThe electronic load meter supports dynamic current or voltage change testing and can simulate sudden changes in the load (such as jumping from 10% load to 100% load) to evaluate the transient response capability of the power supply. This is crucial for verifying the dynamic stability of the power supply.

Data recording and analysisModern electronic load gauges are usually equipped with data recording functions, which can store parameters such as voltage, current, and power during the testing process, and generate curve graphs or reports through software, making it easy for engineers to analyze power performance

2、 Application scenarios of electronic load gauges

  • Power supply research and productionDuring the power supply design phase, electronic load gauges are used to verify the rationality of circuit design; In the production process, it is used for batch testing of product output characteristics to ensure consistency.

  • Battery testingThrough constant current or constant voltage mode, the electronic load meter can test the charging and discharging efficiency, capacity, and cycle life of the battery.

  • Automotive electronic testingIn the testing of car power supplies (such as DC-DC converters), electronic load gauges can simulate transient load changes during engine start-up to verify the anti-interference ability of the power supply.

LED driver testThe electronic load meter can simulate the load characteristics of LEDs, test the constant current accuracy and dimming performance of the driving circuit.

3、 Technical parameters and industry standards

  • The measurement range of electronic load gauges usually covers 0A to tens of amperes, with an accuracy of 0.03% ± 0.05% FS (full scale). Industry standards such as IEC 62368-1 impose strict requirements on the safety and performance of power supplies, and the test results of electronic load devices must comply with these specifications. In addition, the high-precision electronic load meter also supports four wire measurement, eliminating the influence of wire resistance on test results.

4、 Purchase suggestions

  • When choosing an electronic load gauge, it is necessary to consider the measurement range, accuracy, dynamic response speed, and interface compatibility. For example, for high-power power supply testing, it is necessary to choose a model that supports currents above 60A; For high-precision requirements, attention should be paid to products with a precision level of 0.03%. We currently have this type of product in the store, providing a DC electronic load tester SDL1020X-C with a measurement range of 0A~60A and an accuracy of 0.03% ± 0.05% FS, suitable for high-precision power testing.
