The Scientific Principles and Practical Applications of the True Triaxial Tester
Date: 2025-08-18Read: 0
The true triaxial tester is a high-precision device used to simulate the mechanical behavior of materials under complex stress states. Its core lies in the ability to independently control the principal stress or strain in three orthogonal directions (X, Y, Z axes). The following is a detailed analysis of its scientific principles and practical applications:
1、 Scientific Principles of True Triaxial Tester
1. Theoretical basis - three-dimensional stress state analysis
According to the generalized Hooke's law in elasticity, the deformation of materials in a three-dimensional stress field needs to consider six independent components. The true triaxial test accurately reproduces complex stress paths in nature or engineering by applying mutually perpendicular and independently adjustable loads.
Unlike conventional uniaxial compression/tensile tests, it breaks through the limitations of the plane strain assumption and more accurately reflects the anisotropic characteristics of materials such as rock, soil, and concrete.
2. Implementation methods of key technologies
Loading system design
Hydraulic servo control: using a closed-loop hydraulic cylinder to drive steel plates or flexible membranes to apply pressure, coupled with high-precision pressure sensors to provide real-time feedback on load size. Modern equipment often integrates digital servo valve technology to achieve dynamic waveform loading.
Boundary condition optimization: To reduce the impact of end friction on the results, low friction coefficient polytetrafluoroethylene liners are usually placed on the upper and lower ends of the specimen, and silicone oil lubricant is applied. Lateral pressure is applied through a combination of rigid retaining rings and flexible airbags to ensure uniform force transmission.
Data collection and synchronization
Utilizing a multi-channel data acquisition system to synchronously record stress, strain, and pore water pressure changes in three directions (particularly important for saturated soil tests). By monitoring the local deformation field distribution through a strain gauge array and combining it with DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technology, a full field displacement cloud map can be drawn.
Support for constitutive model validation
The experimental data can be directly used to calibrate the parameters of advanced constitutive models and improve the accuracy of numerical simulation predictions.
3. Typical stress path examples
Conventional triaxial compression (CTC): Maintain constant confining pressure, gradually increase axial deviation stress until failure, mainly used to obtain Mohr Coulomb strength criterion parameters.
Equal loading path: synchronously increasing three principal stresses in a fixed proportion to study the failure mechanism of materials at different Lord angles.
Cyclic loading and unloading test: Simulate the repeated changes in the main shock and aftershock effects under earthquake action, and observe the development law of cumulative plastic deformation.
2、 Practical Application of True Triaxial Tester
1. Geotechnical engineering field
Design of deep foundation pit support
By testing the strength indicators of undisturbed soil samples at different depths, optimize the embedding depth and spacing settings of the pile and anchor support structure.
Safety assessment of nuclear power plant site
Conduct graded loading tests on the long-term creep characteristics of rock masses near fault zones, and predict the impact of gradual deformation that may occur over millions of years on reactor vessels.
Demonstration of the plan to connect the underwater tunnel
Simulate the ultimate bearing capacity of the tunnel face during the propulsion process of the shield machine under high water pressure environment to avoid sudden surge accidents.
2. Materials Science Research
Performance characterization of new composite materials
The application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer based composites in the aerospace field requires strict multi-directional load tolerance testing.
Applicability evaluation of biomedical materials
The bone induced interface of artificial joint implants needs to withstand multi-directional dynamic loads during human walking. By simulating the stress change rate during the gait cycle, the structural topology of porous titanium alloy scaffolds is optimized.
Reliability assessment of electronic packaging
The thermal stress mismatch problem generated by chip packaging materials during thermal cycling can be analyzed by coupling the temperature field with a temperature controlled true triaxial testing system.
3. Energy development related
Prediction of Fracturing Effect in Shale Gas Reservoir
By reconstructing the stress field environment of the formation and testing the variation law of rock fracture pressure around the horizontal well section with perforation angle, the hydraulic fracturing design scheme can be guided.
Research on the Safety of CO2 Geological Storage
Monitor the trend of changes in reservoir rock permeability with increasing effective stress under supercritical conditions, and establish a seal integrity evolution model for the cap rock.
