Detailed Explanation of Height Gauge Measurement Methods and Application Points
Date: 2025-06-15Read: 0
height gaugeIt is a precision measuring tool commonly used in many industrial fields such as mechanical processing and mold manufacturing, mainly used to measure dimensional parameters such as height, depth, and flatness of parts. Its accurate and reasonable measurement method is crucial for ensuring product quality.
1、 Direct measurement method
This is the basic measurement method for height gauges. Before use, place the height gauge on a stable measuring platform and calibrate it to ensure its zero position is accurate. For example, to measure the height of a workpiece from its surface to the reference plane, the base of the height gauge is attached to the reference plane, and then the ruler frame is moved to slowly lower the measuring contact and make contact with the measured surface of the workpiece. At this time, the value read from the scale is the height value of the surface relative to the reference plane. During the operation, it is necessary to ensure that the measuring contact is perpendicular to the surface being measured to avoid measurement errors caused by tilting. The perpendicularity can be ensured by visual inspection or with the help of auxiliary vertical guiding devices.

2、 Indirect measurement method
When encountering parts with complex shapes that are difficult to directly measure with height gauge contacts, indirect measurement methods are needed. For example, to measure the depth of a hole, you can first use a height gauge to measure the height from the plane of the hole opening to the reference plane, and then place a specially designed depth gauge into the hole to measure the length of the depth gauge from the bottom of the hole to the plane of the hole opening. The two can be added together to obtain the depth of the hole. Alternatively, when measuring the height difference of different steps on the step axis, the height of each step relative to the same reference plane can be measured separately, and the height difference between the steps can be calculated by calculating the difference. However, this method requires multiple measurements and attention should be paid to the uniformity of the reference plane and the accuracy of the measurement data recording during each measurement.
3、 Comparative measurement method
Comparative measurement method is to compare a standard measuring block or a pre measured standard part with the measured workpiece at a known height to obtain measurement results. First align the height gauge with the standard gauge block and zero it, then keep the other settings of the height gauge unchanged before measuring the workpiece. The displayed numerical difference is the height difference of the workpiece relative to the standard gauge block. This method can improve measurement efficiency and accuracy to a certain extent, especially suitable for rapid detection of the same type of size in batch measurement, but the premise is that the accuracy of the standard gauge block or standard part must be high enough and well preserved.
4、 Precautions
When using a height gauge for measurement, the instrument should be calibrated regularly to ensure its measurement accuracy. At the same time, the measurement environment should try to avoid excessive vibration and temperature changes, as external factors may affect the stability of the height gauge and the size status of the measured workpiece, resulting in measurement errors. Moreover, operators need to undergo professional training, familiarize themselves with the various functions and operating specifications of the height gauge, handle measuring contacts and other components with care to prevent damage to the instrument. Only in this way can the height gauge truly play its precise role in size measurement and provide reliable measurement data support for industrial production.
In short, mastering the different measurement methods of height gauges and paying attention to relevant precautions are necessary to enable them to accurately complete various dimensional measurement tasks in mechanical manufacturing and other related work.
