Directly capturing unpaired electrons: advantages of electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer
Date: 2025-11-16Read: 0
In the fields of materials science, chemistry, and life sciences, many key physical processes, chemical reactions, and biological functions are closely related to unpaired electrons.Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometerIt is an analytical technique that can directly and specifically detect and characterize paramagnetic substances containing unpaired electrons. It is a tool for revealing the structure and dynamic information of paramagnetic centers such as free radicals, transition metal ions, and point defects.
The physical basis of EPR technology is that unpaired electrons in paramagnetic materials undergo energy level splitting (Zeeman effect) under the action of an external static magnetic field, and absorb microwave energy at specific frequencies to undergo energy level transitions. By scanning the magnetic field and detecting the microwave absorption signal, EPR spectrometer can obtain rich structural and dynamic information. This direct detection ability for unpaired electrons is not possessed by other spectroscopic techniques such as NMR and XRD, making it important in the following studies:
1. Free radical chemistry: directly detecting and identifying short-lived free radical intermediates, tracking the mechanisms of reactions such as photocatalysis, polymerization, and oxidative degradation.
2. Transition metal complexes: Determine the valence state, coordination environment, electronic structure, and spin state of metal ions, widely used in catalysis and bioinorganic chemistry research.
3. Material defect analysis: Characterize point defects (such as color centers and vacancies) in semiconductor and oxide materials, and correlate defect structures with the optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of the materials.
4. Biomedical applications: using spin labeling technology to study protein structure dynamics, or using spin trapping technology to detect short-lived free radicals in organisms for the study of oxidative stress-related diseases.

电子顺磁共振波谱仪

Modern EPR technology has evolved from continuous CW-EPR to pulsed EPR, and has spawned various advanced technologies such as:
1. Electron nuclear double resonance: Analyzing the interaction of nuclear spins around unpaired electrons to obtain high-resolution local structural information.
2. Relaxation time measurement: Study the dynamic processes of paramagnetic centers and the microscopic characteristics of the surrounding environment.
3. Imaging technology: achieving spatial distribution imaging of paramagnetic substances.
The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer provides scientists with a window to explore the world of unpaired electrons. It can reveal the structure, reactivity, and dynamics of materials and molecules at the atomic and electronic levels, and is a powerful engine driving the development of cutting-edge basic science and applied research.
