Copper casting billet ultrasonic flaw detector is a microscopic microscope that penetrates through grains
Date: 2025-06-26Read: 3
The ultrasonic flaw detector for copper castings penetrates metal grains through high-frequency sound waves, accurately capturing internal defect signals and becoming a core tool for quality control in the copper processing industry. This device can detect defects such as pores, inclusions, and cracks with a diameter of 0.2mm or more, with a detection efficiency four times higher than traditional methods. It is widely used in advanced manufacturing fields such as aerospace, nuclear power, and ships.
1、 Technical principle: The "game" mechanism between sound waves and grains
Copper castings are prone to forming coarse columnar crystals during melting and casting, leading to increased attenuation of ultrasonic scattering. Taking the detection of copper alloy pipe fittings in a certain nuclear power plant as an example, a 2.5MHz twin crystal straight probe was used. By optimizing the pulse width (50ns) and gain (60dB), it successfully penetrated an 80mm thick copper billet and detected a slag inclusion of Φ 0.3mm at a depth of 30mm. The device calculates the defect location (L=Δ t × 4700/2) by analyzing the echo time difference (Δ t) and amplitude (A), combined with the copper material sound velocity (4700m/s), with a positioning accuracy of ± 0.1mm.
2、 Core application scenario: Quality closed-loop from raw materials to finished products
1. Defect screening during the casting stage
In the inspection of copper ingots, phased array ultrasonic technology (PAUT) generates three-dimensional images of internal defects through electronic scanning. After applying this technology in a copper processing enterprise, the missed detection rate of ingot shrinkage holes decreased from 12% to 0.5%, and the single piece detection time was shortened to 120 seconds.
2. Quality monitoring of hot rolling process
For hot-rolled copper plates, a 1MHz low-frequency probe can penetrate thicknesses of over 200mm. During the production of copper sleeves for a certain ship's propulsion system, interlayer non fusion defects were detected using TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) to avoid the risk of batch scrapping.
3. Final inspection and control of precision components
In the detection of copper strips in semiconductor lead frames, high-frequency surface wave probes (10MHz) can identify surface microcracks (width>0.05mm), and the detection sensitivity is 300 times higher than visual inspection.
3、 Technological Innovation: Breakthrough from Single Frequency Detection to Intelligent Recognition
1. Multi frequency coupling technology
The "dual frequency switching" probe developed by a certain enterprise can automatically match frequencies of 1-5 MHz and adapt to copper billets of different thicknesses. In the thickness range of 70-140mm, this technology increases the defect detection rate from 68% to 95%.
2. AI defect classification algorithm
The ultrasound signal analysis system based on deep learning can automatically distinguish three types of defects: porosity, slag inclusion, and cracks, with an accuracy rate of 99.2%. After the application of copper turbine discs by a certain aviation engine supplier, the number of quality inspectors decreased by 70%, and the misjudgment rate decreased to below 0.3%.
3. Cloud platform data management
Through 5G+industrial Internet, ultrasonic testing data is uploaded to the cloud in real time to build a quality traceability system for copper throughout its life cycle. A new energy vehicle battery copper bar manufacturer used this system to reduce the product defect rate from 0.8% to 0.1%.

The ultrasonic flaw detector for copper castings is developing towards high precision, intelligence, and full scene direction. With breakthroughs in cutting-edge technologies such as quantum ultrasound and terahertz imaging, future equipment will achieve nanoscale defect detection, providing more reliable quality assurance for advanced copper material manufacturing and redefining the quality control standards in the copper processing industry.
