Instructions for using a pen type salinity meter
Date: 2025-08-25Read: 36
Pen type salinity meterIt is a portable instrument that can quickly measure solution salinity using conductivity, optical refraction, or ion selective electrode methods. It is widely used in fields such as marine monitoring, aquaculture, and food processing.
Pen type salinity meterUsage and precautions:
1、 Preparation before use
Check the instrument:
Confirm that the battery is fully charged (clear display screen without low battery warning).
Check whether the electrode (conductivity method) or prism (optical refraction method) is clean and undamaged.
Prepare calibration solution:
Select the appropriate concentration of standard salt solution (such as 706mg/L NaCl solution or 15ppt seawater standard solution) according to the instrument manual.
Calibration solution should be sealed and stored to avoid contamination, and should be replaced promptly after multiple uses.
Clean measurement area:
Clean the electrode or prism with pure water or distilled water, wipe dry and set aside.
2、 Calibration steps (using conductivity method as an example)
Enter calibration mode:
Long press the "CAL" or "MODE" button on the instrument for 3-5 seconds until the display screen shows the words "CAL" or "Calibration".
浸入校准液:
Immerse the electrode in a standard salt solution and gently stir to eliminate bubbles.
Waiting for stable readings:
Let it stand for 10-20 seconds, wait for the reading to stabilize, and then press the "confirm" button to save the calibration value.
Exit calibration mode:
Short press the "MODE" button to return to measurement mode, or wait for the instrument to automatically exit.
Optical Refraction Calibration:
Drop a drop of calibration solution onto the surface of the prism, close the cover plate, observe the scale line through the eyepiece, adjust the calibration screw to align the boundary line with the standard value.
3、 Measurement steps
Conductivity based salinometer
Immersion in solution:
Immerse the electrode vertically into the solution to be tested, to a depth of about 2-3cm, avoiding touching the bottom or side walls of the container.
Mixing and standing:
Gently stir the solution to eliminate temperature gradients, then let it stand for 10-15 seconds.
Read data:
After the display screen reading stabilizes, record the salinity value (usually in ppt, ‰, or%).
Some instruments will display temperature values (℃/℉) simultaneously, and it needs to be confirmed whether the temperature compensation function is enabled.
Optical Refraction Salinity Meter
Drip solution:
Take a small amount of the test liquid with a straw and drop it onto the surface of the prism.
Close and observe:
Slowly close the cover plate to avoid generating bubbles, and observe the boundary between light and dark through the eyepiece.
Read scale:
Adjust the focal length of the eyepiece to make the scale line clear, and read the salinity value corresponding to the boundary line.
4、 Maintenance after measurement
Cleaning electrodes/prisms:
Rinse the electrode or prism with pure water or distilled water, avoiding direct rinsing with tap water (which may damage the optical system).
When wiping dry, gently absorb moisture with a soft dust-free cloth to avoid scratches caused by wiping.
Storage protection:
Electrode method: Cover the electrode with a protective sleeve to avoid drying or collision.
Optical method: Store the instrument in a dry, dark environment to prevent the prism from getting damp or moldy.
Battery management:
When not in use for a long time, remove the battery to prevent leakage and damage to the instrument.
