Research on Temperature Control Accuracy of High and Low Temperature Tensile Testing Machine
Date: 2025-11-24Read: 0
1、 Introduction: Why is temperature control accuracy crucial?
In the field of materials science and engineering, the mechanical properties of materials (such as strength, plasticity, elastic modulus) are closely related to temperature. A small temperature fluctuation can trigger changes in the microstructure of materials, such as atomic diffusion, dislocation motion, and phase transition, leading to significant differences in macroscopic mechanical properties.
For example, for polymer materials, near the glass transition temperature (Tg), their behavior will transition from glass brittleness to high elastic toughness, and the modulus change can reach several orders of magnitude. If there is a deviation in temperature control, the measured Tg and modulus values will be meaningless. For metal materials, even a deviation of ± 5 ℃ at high temperatures can lead to an error of over 5% in the measured yield strength, which is fatal for material evaluation in safety critical fields such as aerospace and nuclear power.
Therefore, the value of the high and low temperature tensile testing machine lies not only in its ability to simulate "high" and "low" temperature environments, but also in its ability to accurately maintain and evenly distribute the set target temperature at the location of the specimen throughout the entire testing process. Temperature control accuracy is the fundamental prerequisite for the scientific, repeatable, and comparable nature of experimental data.
2、 Analysis of Core Factors Affecting Temperature Control Accuracy
Temperature control accuracy is a systematic indicator that is constrained by several key factors, including:
1. Heating and cooling system
Heating system: Resistance wire heating is usually used. The bottleneck lies in the quality of the PID control algorithm for heating power. Poor algorithms can lead to overheating or slow heating, making it difficult to stabilize at the target point.
Refrigeration system: There are mainly two types: mechanical refrigeration and liquid nitrogen refrigeration.
Mechanical refrigeration: using a compressor refrigeration cycle, which has good stability, but the cooling rate is relatively slow, and the power consumption is high at low temperatures, making it more difficult to control.
Liquid nitrogen refrigeration: The cooling rate is extremely fast, but control is a huge challenge. Directly injecting liquid nitrogen will cause severe temperature fluctuations and significant temperature gradients inside the box. The advanced equipment adopts the "liquid nitrogen pneumatic modulation" technology, which achieves smooth cooling by precisely controlling the flow and mixing of gaseous nitrogen. This requires very high requirements for nozzle design and control logic.
2. Insulation and Thermal Design
Thermal insulation layer: the test box must use high-performance thermal insulation materials (such as polyurethane foam, glass wool) and reasonable thickness to minimize the heat exchange with the environment and ensure the stability of the temperature field.
Thermal design: This is the key to determining temperature uniformity. including:
Airflow organization design: How to form a stable and uniform airflow field inside the box? Usually, a fan is used to drive air, which flows evenly through the heater/evaporator and sample area through structures such as air ducts and deflectors. Poor design can lead to the presence of "hot spots" and "cold spots" at different locations inside the box.
Thermal short circuit effect: Metal components such as sensor leads and force transmission rods passing through the box will form a "thermal bridge", causing heat leakage, especially at harsh temperatures. This effect is particularly significant and requires insulation treatment on the structure.
3. Measurement and feedback system
Temperature sensors: Common ones include PT100 platinum resistors and K-type thermocouples. The accuracy, response time, and installation position of sensors directly determine the reliability of feedback signals. Sensors must be calibrated regularly to prevent drift.
Control algorithm: Traditional PID controllers often struggle to handle temperature control systems with high nonlinearity and large lag. Advanced equipment adopts fuzzy PID, adaptive PID, or predictive control algorithms, which can dynamically adjust control parameters according to the real-time status of the system, achieving smooth and precise control of temperature, especially the temperature changing process.
4. Influence of load and heat capacity
The test chamber usually exhibits excellent temperature control performance in an unloaded state. However, when metal fixtures and specimens (especially those with high specific heat capacity or good thermal conductivity) are placed, the thermal capacity of the entire system undergoes significant changes. The sample and fixture will absorb or release a large amount of heat, becoming a huge "heat sink" that seriously interferes with the balance of the temperature field. Therefore, an excellent testing machine must be able to maintain high accuracy and uniformity under full load conditions.
3、 Optimization strategy for improving temperature control accuracy
In response to the above influencing factors, the following optimization measures can be taken:
1. Optimization of system design:
Adopting multi zone independent temperature control technology, heaters and sensors are arranged at multiple positions such as the top, middle, and bottom of the box to independently control and compensate for uneven heat distribution.
Optimize the design of air ducts and fan impellers, use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to simulate and optimize the flow field inside the box during the design phase, ensuring uniform airflow.
Vacuum insulation or low thermal conductivity materials are used for transmission rods and other components to cut off thermal short circuits.
2. Upgrade of control strategy:
Introduce more intelligent control algorithms, such as fuzzy adaptive PID, to enable automatic parameter tuning and adapt to different temperature points and load conditions.
Implementing 'feedforward control', the control system can predict its impact on temperature and compensate in advance before starting the tensile test (a process that generates heat).
3. Norms for use and maintenance:
Adequate preheating/pre cooling: Before starting formal testing, the system must be given sufficient time to allow the box, fixture, and specimen to reach and stabilize at the target temperature.
Reasonable sample placement: The sample should be placed in an area with good temperature uniformity inside the box (usually in the center of the studio), and avoid blocking the airflow channel.
Regular calibration and maintenance: Regularly use traceable standard thermometers to calibrate the multi-point temperature of the equipment on site. Regularly clean the condenser, check the sealing strip, and calibrate the sensor to ensure that the system is in optimal working condition.
4、 Evaluation of Temperature Control Accuracy
The evaluation of temperature control accuracy mainly depends on three indicators:
Temperature deviation: The average difference between the displayed temperature of the device and the actual temperature at the center point of the workspace inside the box.
Temperature fluctuation: Half of the difference (± X ℃) between the maximum and minimum temperature values over time at the center point of the workspace.
Temperature uniformity: The maximum difference between the average temperatures of any two points in a workspace in a stable state.
5、 Conclusion
The temperature control accuracy of the high and low temperature tensile testing machine is a concentrated reflection of its technical level. It is a systematic engineering that runs through the entire process of design, manufacturing, use, and maintenance. It is not just a number on the controller, but also the result of the combined effects of heating/cooling systems, insulation design, airflow organization, control algorithms, and measurement techniques. With the increasingly stringent requirements for performance evaluation of new materials, the pursuit of temperature control accuracy will also be endless. The future development trend will focus on smarter adaptive control, more efficient and energy-saving refrigeration solutions, and real-time optimization based on digital twins, providing a more solid and reliable data foundation for scientific research and industrial testing.
