Guidelines for Daily and Deep Maintenance of ICP-OES Spectrometer
Date: 2025-07-03Read: 6
1ICP-OES spectrometerDaily cleaning and optical system maintenance
Daily cleaning of exterior and interfaces
Wipe the instrument casing with a clean soft cloth to prevent dust accumulation from affecting heat dissipation.
Regularly inspect and clean the interfaces of the injection system (such as atomizer and torch connections) to prevent chemical residues from corroding components.
Cleaning of optical components: Use specialized lens cleaning paper or degreasing cotton dipped in ethanol ether mixture (3:7 ratio) to gently wipe the lens and reflector every month to prevent liquid from flowing into the instrument.
Weekly inspection of the injection system
Check if the atomizer is blocked: If a decrease in aerosol or sensitivity is found, use dilute acid or methanol to blow back and clear it. If it is severely blocked, soak it in dilute nitric acid overnight and rinse it.
Cleaning the atomization chamber: After high pollution scenarios such as food testing, soak the atomization chamber in 20% nitric acid overnight and rinse it with ultrapure water.
2、 Gas and Waterway System Management
Daily check of argon gas supply
Confirm that the pressure of the argon cylinder is ≥ 5MPa, the output pressure is stable at 0.55-0.8MPa, the purity is ≥ 99.999%, and avoid ignition failure or data drift.
Perform monthly gas leakage testing: After closing the gas cylinder, observe the pressure gauge. If the pointer drops, check the pipeline connection.
Clean gas pipelines weekly
Pull out the pipeline section, briefly release air and blow out water droplets and dust particles to prevent mechanical debris from blocking the air path.
When installing the carrier gas pipeline, avoid excessive bending to prevent the fluctuation of the carrier gas flow from affecting the measurement.
Replace and clean the circulating water every month
Add deionized water to the circulating cooling system and clean the water filter to prevent clogging.
Thoroughly replace the circulating water every 3 months and add an appropriate amount of isopropanol to inhibit bacterial growth.
3、 Deep maintenance of key components
Torch tube maintenance and cleaning
Rinse the torch tube with deionized water after each analysis to remove residual samples.
Soak the torch tube in aqua regia for 6 hours every month to remove carbon deposits (high protein sample residue). Stubborn stains can be soaked in 2% hydrofluoric acid for a short time (≤ 5 minutes), rinsed with ultrapure water, and dried.
Nebulizer and pump tube management
After daily analysis, release the peristaltic pump tube pressure arm to extend its service life (typical lifespan of 1-2 weeks).
When replacing the pump tube, re optimize the pump arm pressure: adjust it to the appropriate pressure through bubble movement method to ensure uniform injection.
Annual replacement of consumables and filters
Replace the argon gas filter (once a year) and purge the 0.1 μ m particle filter of the detector (once a year).
Replace the molecular sieve filter (with a lifespan of 1200-1500 hours) and activated carbon filter (with a lifespan of 1500-1750 hours) according to the frequency of use.
4、 Environment and Software Management
Control laboratory temperature and humidity
The temperature should be controlled at 20-25 ℃, and the humidity should be between 40% and 60%. Use air conditioning or dehumidifier to adjust it.
Avoid placing the instrument near the circulating water machine or air compressor to reduce the interference of vibration on the optical system.
Regular calibration and software updates
Perform wavelength calibration monthly, using standard light sources or samples to ensure spectral accuracy.
Timely install software updates released by vendors, fix vulnerabilities, and optimize performance.
Summary Table of Key Actions

maintenance cycle key action goal
daily Clean the exterior, check the argon pressure, and flush the torch tube Prevent dust accumulation and ensure stable ignition
weekly Clean the atomizer and check for air leaks in the air circuit Avoid blockages and ensure stable gas flow
monthly Replace circulating water, clean filter, wavelength correction Maintain the cleanliness of the optical path to ensure data accuracy
quarterly Thoroughly replace the circulating water and check for pump tube wear Prevent waterway pollution and extend the service life of pump pipes
every year Replace the argon gas filter and particulate filter Ensure gas purity and maintain detector sensitivity
Reduced failure rate: Through gas leakage testing and torch cleaning, the ignition failure rate decreased by 60%. Effect and Benefit
Data stability improvement: Wavelength correction and optical component cleaning optimize the detection limit (LOD) by 15% -20%.
Extended lifespan: Standardized maintenance can extend the service life of ICP-OES from 8 years to over 12 years, reducing replacement costs by 40%.
ICP-OES spectrometerStrictly implementing the above maintenance plan can significantly improve the reliability and analysis efficiency of ICP-OES, providing stable support for laboratories or production lines.
