UV disinfection equipment selection guide: avoid these 3 common traps!

UV disinfection equipment selection guide: avoid these 3 common traps!

  1、 Blindly pursuing 'high power' and ignoring applicable scenarios
1. Phenomenon: Merchants promote that "the higher the power, the faster the sterilization", and consumers mistakenly believe that high power equals high efficiency.
2. Truth:
-The effectiveness of ultraviolet sterilization depends on the wavelength (preferably 254nm), irradiation dose (time x intensity), and coverage range, rather than just power.
-High power devices may generate excessive ozone (especially low wavelength products), which is harmful to human health.
3. Suggestion for avoiding pitfalls:
-Choose the appropriate power according to the usage scenario (home/medical/industrial), for example:
(1) Family: 15-30W (suitable for small-scale item disinfection);
(2) Medical: 50W or above (with reflective cover for enhanced coverage).
-Prioritize selecting products with wavelength parameters and ozone emissions labeled.
  2、 Confusing "UV tube" and "LED UV", misleading cost-effectiveness
1. Phenomenon: LED ultraviolet equipment is cheaper, but consumers are not clear about its applicability.
2. Truth:
-Traditional ultraviolet lamps have high sterilization efficiency (such as low-pressure mercury lamps), but have a short lifespan (about 8000 hours) and contain mercury, which is not environmentally friendly.
-LED UV: Mercury free, long lifespan (over 20000 hours), but single LED has low power and requires dense arrangement to achieve the same effect, which may result in higher costs.
3. Suggestion for avoiding pitfalls:
-Small scale disinfection (such as mobile phones, keys) can choose LED portable models;
-For large-scale disinfection (such as rooms and equipment), traditional light tubes and timer combinations are preferred;
-Be wary of low priced LED products falsely labeling power and request to check the light intensity detection report.
  3、 Neglecting safety design and burying health hazards
1. Phenomenon: Some devices lack protective functions, causing skin/eye damage due to user misoperation.
2. Truth:
-Direct exposure of ultraviolet rays to the human body may cause electrical eye inflammation or skin burns, especially in the UVC band (254nm).
-Poor quality equipment may not have delayed start, human body sensing, or automatic shutdown functions.
3. Suggestion for avoiding pitfalls:
-Products with safety certification (such as CE, FDA) must be selected;
-Priority should be given to the following functions:
(1) Delay start (30 second buffer, convenient to leave the irradiation area);
(2) Human body sensing (automatically closes upon detecting movement);
(3) Child lock+sealed design (to prevent accidental contact).
  4、 Extra bonus points: How to determine if the device is reliable?
1. Check the test report: It is required to provide microbiological killing effect testing (such as the killing rate of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus).
2. Check wavelength parameters: High quality products will be clearly labeled with the UVC band (250-280nm) to avoid vague descriptions of "ultraviolet".
3. Question on after-sales policy: Does the brand provide replacement services for lamps/LEDs after their lifespan expires?
