According to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, on May 19th, the European Union issued a notice to recall more than 20 brands of tattoo ink and toner produced in China, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries. The main reasons for the centralized recall are excessive heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, cobalt, nickel and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (including naphthalene and benzo [a] pyrene). Arsenic is carcinogenic, and exposure to lead is harmful to human health and can cause neurodevelopmental toxicity. Nickel may cause skin irritation and allergies or trigger allergic reactions, cadmium can accumulate in the body and cause damage to bones and kidneys, and PAHs are carcinogens.

According to the European Council Resolution ResAP (2008) 1 on requirements and standards for tattoos and long-lasting cosmetics, it is recommended that the content of arsenic and lead should not exceed 2 mg/kg, cadmium should not exceed 0.2 mg/kg, cobalt should not exceed 25 mg/kg, and the nickel content in tattoo ink should be as low as technically possible. The total content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg, and the content of benzo [a] pyrene (BaP) should not exceed 0.005 mg/kg. Here, the Jinhua Entry Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau suggests that domestic production and export enterprises attach great importance to this.
