Share some practical tips for preventing dust accumulation in refrigeration cycle cooling systems
Date: 2025-10-21Read: 1

The accumulation of dust in the cooling system of a refrigeration cycle can lead to a decrease in heat dissipation efficiency, an increase in equipment energy consumption, and even cause overheating faults. The following is a set of practical tips for preventing dust accumulation that combine practicality and operability:

1、 Source prevention: Reduce dust contact with heat dissipation components
Optimize equipment placement environment
Avoid placing refrigeration cycle units in dust intensive areas such as powder areas in workshops, woodworking rooms, near doors, windows, or air conditioning vents. Prioritize placing them in clean, dry, and ventilated rooms, away from dust sources.
The bottom of the equipment should be kept 10-20cm away from the ground (height increasing brackets can be installed), and a gap of more than 30cm should be reserved between the side and back of the equipment and the wall to ensure air circulation and reduce dust deposition.
Install protective filtering device
Attach a detachable dust screen (choose 200-300 mesh nylon or metal mesh, as a small aperture can affect air flow) at the inlet of the cooling fan, replace or clean it regularly, and intercept large particles of dust and flocculent substances.
For industrial high dust environments, an additional small air filter cover (with activated carbon or HEPA filter) can be installed to further purify the air entering the cooling system. Attention should be paid to the resistance of the filter to avoid affecting the cooling airflow.
Control the humidity of the ambient air
Maintain a relative humidity of 40% -60% in the environment. Excessive humidity can lead to dust clumping and sticking to the heat sink, making it difficult to clean; If the humidity is too low, dust is prone to float and accelerate dust accumulation. Can be used in conjunction with dehumidifiers or humidifiers to adjust humidity.
2、 Regular cleaning: timely removal of accumulated dust
Establish a cleaning cycle (adjusted according to environmental dust)
Ordinary laboratory/office environment: clean once every 1-2 months;
Industrial medium dust environment: clean once every 2-4 weeks;
High dust environment: Clean once a week and shorten the cycle if necessary.
Correct cleaning operation steps
Power off cooling: Before cleaning, the device must be powered off and wait for the cooling system (fan, heat sink) to completely cool down to avoid electric shock or burns.
External dust removal: Use a soft bristled brush (such as a wool brush) to gently remove floating dust on the surface of the heat dissipation grille and fan, avoiding excessive force that may damage the fan blades or fins.
Deep cleaning: For dust accumulation in the gaps of the heat sink, compressed air can be used to blow dust (pressure controlled at 0.2-0.3MPa, blowing air in the opposite direction from the heat sink outlet to the inlet to avoid dust blowing into the interior of the equipment); If dust accumulates and clumps, you can first wipe it with a small amount of anhydrous ethanol dipped in a damp soft cloth, and then dry it with compressed air.
Cleaning drainage/water connection components: Some cooling systems of refrigeration cycle units are equipped with condensate trays, and dust and dirt inside the trays need to be cleaned simultaneously to avoid bacterial growth and blockage of drainage outlets.
Precautions
Do not use high-pressure water guns or rinse the heat dissipation components directly with a large amount of water to prevent electrical components from getting damp and short circuiting.
Avoid using corrosive cleaning agents (such as strong acids and alkalis) to prevent corrosion of the metal material of the heat sink.
3、 Long term optimization: Improve the anti dust accumulation ability of the cooling system
Upgrade the protection of heat dissipation components
For heat dissipation fans that are prone to dust accumulation, they can be replaced with fans with dust covers, or a small amount of rust proof grease can be applied to the fan shaft end to reduce dust entering the bearings and causing jamming.
If the heat sink has a dense structure, a layer of anti stick dust coating (such as a special silicon-based coating) can be sprayed on the surface regularly to reduce dust adhesion and facilitate subsequent cleaning.
Regularly check the operating status of the cooling system
During each cleaning, check whether the fan rotates smoothly and has no abnormal noise. If the fan speed decreases or the bearings are stuck, replace the fan or add lubricating grease in a timely manner to avoid dust accumulation and acceleration indirectly caused by insufficient air flow (slow air flow can easily cause dust to settle).
Monitor the temperature of the cooling outlet of the monitoring equipment. If the temperature significantly increases (5-10 ℃ higher than normal), it may be due to severe dust accumulation or a malfunction in the cooling system, which needs to be promptly investigated.
Standardize equipment usage habits
To avoid long-term high load operation of the equipment, set the cooling temperature reasonably (not exceeding the rated range of the equipment), and reduce the accumulation of dust caused by continuous high-intensity operation of the cooling system.
During the equipment shutdown period, cover the entire body with a dust cover, focusing on protecting the heat dissipation area to prevent dust accumulation when idle.
4、 Special scenario response
Outdoor usage scenario: It is necessary to install a rain and dust cover for the refrigeration cycle unit, select equipment models with IP54 or above protection level, and regularly check the sealing performance of the protective cover.
Chemical corrosion environment: In addition to preventing dust accumulation, corrosion-resistant heat dissipation components (such as stainless steel heat sinks) should be selected, and cleaning frequency should be increased to avoid component damage caused by the reaction between corrosive dust and metal.
