Frequently Asked Questions about Domestic Nanoindentation Instruments: Comprehensive Guide to Procurement, Use, and Maintenance
Date: 2025-12-08Read: 0

The nanoindentation instrument, as a core device for testing the micro mechanical properties of materials, is widely used in scientific research and industrial fields. Domestic instruments have become the choice of many users due to their high cost-effectiveness and adaptability advantages, but procurement selection, operating standards, and maintenance issues often affect their effectiveness. This article summarizes common problems and solutions in three core scenarios to help efficiently use domestic nanoindentation instruments.

Procurement selection: Accurately match requirements and avoid selection errors
When purchasing, the first priority is to clarify the testing requirements and avoid blindly pursuing parameters. If used for testing thin films and soft materials, special attention should be paid to the minimum load accuracy (recommended ≤ 0.1 μ N) and thermal drift control capability (preferably ≤ 0.02nm/s models); For hard materials or industrial quality inspection, models with a maximum load of ≥ 2N and strong wear resistance of the indenter should be selected. At the same time, technical indicators need to be verified to ensure that the instrument meets the testing scenario.
After sales service cannot be ignored, priority should be given to brands that provide at least 1 year of warranty and localized technical support, and it should be clarified whether supporting services such as installation and commissioning, personnel training, etc. are included. In addition, it is necessary to confirm the compatibility of the instrument, such as whether it supports extension modules such as AFM imaging and temperature testing, in order to reserve space for future experimental upgrades.
Operation: Standardize the process and solve common faults
Improper operation can easily lead to data deviation or equipment failure. Before starting up, the instrument should be placed in a constant temperature environment of 22 ± 1 ℃ without vibration, preheated for 30 minutes to 1 hour to ensure the stability of the piezoelectric ceramic system. Sample preparation should pay attention to cutting to around 10mm × 10mm, polishing the surface to a mirror finish, and ultrasonic cleaning to avoid roughness affecting indentation recognition.
Among common faults, poor contact of the pressure head is often caused by pollution or wear. The pressure head can be cleaned with alcohol swabs or calibrated multiple times on copper standard samples; When the indentation shape is irregular, it is necessary to check the flatness of the sample and adjust the fixture to ensure that the sample is perpendicular to the indenter. Large data errors may be caused by fluctuations in environmental temperature or lack of calibration. It is recommended to calibrate regularly with standard samples and use the King model to correct for base effects. During operation, it is necessary to avoid overloading and ensure that the indentation depth does not exceed 10 times the radius of the indenter to prevent equipment damage.
Maintenance: Extend lifespan, ensure stable accuracy
The core of daily maintenance is cleaning and calibration. After testing, use dust-free paper to wipe the indenter and sample stage to remove residual particles. If not in use for a long time, cover with a dust cover to prevent moisture. As a key component, the pressure head needs to be regularly checked for sharpness. Generally, it is calibrated after testing 100 samples and replaced in a timely manner when it is severely worn.
In terms of regular maintenance, it is recommended to conduct a comprehensive calibration every 6-12 months, including indicators such as displacement accuracy and load accuracy, which should be operated by professional technicians. The software needs to be updated in a timely manner to obtain functional optimization, and at the same time, develop the habit of saving data in real time. In case of sudden power failure, it needs to be recalibrated before use. Operators need to undergo professional training, strictly follow the user manual, and avoid frequent switching of loading directions that may cause overheating of piezoelectric ceramics.
The stable operation of domestic nanoindentation instruments relies on scientific selection, standardized operation, and regular maintenance. Mastering the above core points can not only fully utilize the performance of the instrument, but also effectively reduce the occurrence rate of failures, providing accurate and reliable guarantees for material mechanics testing.
