Using ESD testing equipment to build a strong electrostatic protection wall for chips requires a systematic promotion from four aspects: testing equipment selection, testing method implementation, protection optimization strategy, and systematic protection construction. The specific plan is as follows:
1、 Accurate selection of ESD testing equipment, covering core testing models
The ESD protection of chips needs to be verified for different discharge modes, and the following key testing equipment should be equipped:
HBM (Human Body Model) Tester
Simulate the discharge process of a charged human body in contact with chip pins, with a test voltage range typically covering 200V-8kV.
Core function: Verify the chip's ability to withstand static electricity risks caused by human operation during production and assembly processes.
MM (Machine Model) Tester
Simulate the discharge of automation equipment when it comes into contact with chips, which results in faster discharge speed and higher peak current.
Core function: Evaluate the anti-static ability of chips in high-speed production lines, especially for high-frequency operation scenarios.
CDM (Charged Device Model) Tester
Simulate the discharge of the chip when it comes into contact with the grounding conductor after being charged, reflecting the static electricity risk of the chip during transportation and storage.
Core function: To detect the static dissipation performance of chip packaging materials and the isolation design of internal circuits.
IEC 61000-4-2 Standard Test System
Supports air discharge (± 15kV) and contact discharge (± 8kV), simulating electrostatic shocks in real environments.
Core function: Verify the anti-interference ability of the chip in terminal application scenarios.
2、 Implement standardized testing procedures and quantify protection levels
Pre test preparation
The chip needs to be in an unpackaged or packaged state (depending on the testing target), and ensure that the testing environment temperature and humidity meet the standards.
Use a high resistance meter to measure the insulation resistance between the chip pins and ground, ensuring that the initial value is greater than 1G Ω to avoid leakage interference.
Phased testing
Stage 1: Taking the HBM model as an example, gradually increase the voltage from low to the tolerance threshold defined in the chip specification, and record the chip functional parameters after each discharge.
Stage 2: If the chip passes Stage 1, perform MM and CDM model testing, with a focus on monitoring transient current waveforms and temperature changes inside the chip.
Stage 3: Simulate real scenarios through the IEC 61000-4-2 system to verify the stability of the chip under continuous electrostatic shock.
Failure Analysis
If there are functional abnormalities in the chip during testing, use FIB (Focused Ion Beam) equipment to locate the failure point, and observe physical damage such as metal layer melting and oxide layer breakdown using SEM.
Case: A certain MCU chip failed in CDM testing, and analysis revealed that the ESD protection diode between its power pin and ground was broken down. The reason was that the diode area was too small, resulting in an excessive current density.
3、 Optimize protection design based on test data
Upgrade of protective circuit
TVS diode selection: Select devices with low dynamic resistance based on the clamp voltage and response time recorded during testing.
Layout optimization: Place ESD protection devices close to the chip pins, shorten the routing length, reduce parasitic inductance, and avoid high-frequency oscillation.
Material and process improvement
Packaging material: EMC (epoxy molding compound) with better conductivity is used to reduce the surface resistance from 1012 Ω to 108 Ω, accelerating the dissipation of electrostatic charges.
Process enhancement: Introducing LDD (lightly doped drain) structure in chip manufacturing to improve the ESD tolerance of MOSFET devices.
System level protection
Add a complete ground plane in PCB design, reduce grounding impedance through multiple via connections, and provide a low impedance path for electrostatic current.
Add common mode choke to sensitive signal lines to suppress electrostatic coupling noise.
4、 Build a closed-loop protection system and continuously iterate and upgrade
Production process control
Deploy ion fans in the chip packaging line to neutralize environmental static electricity, and use anti-static turnover boxes to transport chips to avoid secondary static electricity accumulation.
Operators wear anti-static wristbands and undergo daily testing using a comprehensive human resistance tester to ensure effective grounding.
Terminal application adaptation
Adjust the test voltage level for different application scenarios and increase ESD testing in high temperature and high humidity environments.
Provide protection level labels for chips to guide customers in reasonable use.
Data driven iteration
Establish an ESD testing database to record the failure modes and improvement effects of different batches of chips, and predict potential risk points through machine learning algorithms.
