【 2025 Weixin Encyclopedia 】 Working principle and usage guide of fully digital frequency conversion depth sounder
Date: 2025-11-26Read: 0
Full digital frequency conversion depth sounderIt is an underwater terrain measurement instrument based on the principle of sound wave reflection, which accurately calculates water depth by emitting ultrasonic waves of different frequencies and receiving echo signals, combined with digital processing technology. The following is a detailed explanation of its working principle and usage guide:
  1、 Working principle
  Acoustic emission and reception
The instrument emits high-frequency ultrasonic pulses (usually between 10kHz and 500kHz) to the bottom of the water through a transducer, and the sound waves propagate at a speed of about 1500m/s in the water.
When sound waves encounter underwater or obstacles, they will reflect, and some of the energy will return and be received by the transducer as echo signals.
  Advantages of Frequency Conversion Technology
Multi frequency adaptiveAutomatically switch frequencies based on water depth (such as using high frequency to increase resolution in shallow water and low frequency to enhance penetration in deep water).
anti-interference capabilityReduce the impact of environmental noise (such as ship engines and water flow) through frequency modulation.
  Signal Processing and Deep Computing
Time difference measurementAccurately record the time interval (Δ t) between the transmitted pulse and the received echo, using the formulaDepth D=(v × Δ t)/2(v is the speed of sound, which needs to be calibrated based on water temperature and salinity) Calculate the water depth.
digital filteringUsing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) to remove clutter and enhance the true echo signal.
real-time imagingMerge depth data with depth maps and location information to generate underwater terrain profiles or 3D models.
  Integration of auxiliary sensors
Usually paired with GPS/Beidou positioning, attitude sensors (compass, inclinometer), sound velocity profiler, etc., to achieve high-precision positioning and dynamic compensation.
  2、 Usage Guide
  1. Preliminary preparation
Equipment inspectionConfirm that the host, transducer, and cable connections are normal, and the battery is fully charged.
  Parameter Settings:
Enter the local sound speed value (which can be obtained through actual measurement with a sound speed meter or by looking up a table).
Set parameters such as transmission power, gain, sampling rate, etc. (default mode is suitable for most scenarios).
  install and fix:
The transducer needs to be vertically immersed in water (to avoid bubble attachment), and installed away from the ship's propeller and drainage outlet.
The host is fixed on the console to ensure that the display screen is clear and visible.
  2. Operation process
Power on calibrationAfter startup, enter the self-test program to complete the sensor zero calibration (such as resetting the attitude sensor to zero).
  data collection:
The ship travels at a constant speed, and the instrument automatically records water depth, position, and time data.
Real time monitoring screen display: water depth curve, current coordinates, trajectory deviation, etc.
  Abnormal investigation:
If there is no echo or data jump, check whether the transducer is submerged and whether there is a strong interference source.
Avoid high-speed navigation in shallow waters to prevent the generation of bubbles in the wake from affecting the signal.
  3. Data processing and analysis
Data exportExport raw data via USB or SD card (usually in CSV, XYZ, or proprietary formats).
  Software post-processing:
Use supporting software such as Hypack and QPS QINSy for tide level correction, trajectory smoothing, and water depth filtering.
Generate contour maps, 3D terrain models, or channel dredging reports.
accuracy verificationCompare and measure at known depth points to ensure that the error is within the allowable range (usually ± 5cm~± 20cm).
  4. Precautions
  environmental impact:
The sound velocity needs to be corrected in high salinity or low temperature water areas; Turbid water may reduce the intensity of echoes.
Avoid collecting critical data during ship acceleration/deceleration or turning.
  maintenance:
Clean the surface of the transducer after each use to prevent biological attachment.
Regularly check the waterproof performance of cable joints, and remove the battery when storing for a long time.
  Safety Specifications:
Pay attention to anti slip and anti electric shock during operation, and avoid working in harsh weather conditions.
  3、 Application scenarios
marine surveying and mappingPort construction, channel dredging, and seabed terrain exploration.
Water monitoringMeasurement of reservoir capacity and assessment of river dredging.
Fishery resource surveyFish habitat detection (combined with biological echo recognition function).
emergency rescueShipwreck location and underwater obstacle investigation.
  4、 Common problem solving
No data displayedCheck the power supply and transducer connections to confirm that the transmission frequency matches the water body.
data driftRe calibrate the attitude sensor and check the stability of the GPS signal.
Weak echoIncrease the transmission power or adjust the gain to avoid areas with dense bubbles.
Through reasonable operation and regular maintenance, the fully digital frequency conversion depth sounder can efficiently provide high-precision water depth data, providing reliable support for marine engineering and hydrological research. Specific operations should refer to the instrument manual and optimize parameters based on the actual environment.
