Detailed Explanation of Distillation Equipment Design
1、 Core principles of distillation equipment
Distillation achieves separation by the difference in boiling points of each component in the mixture, using a combination of multiple partial vaporization and condensation operations to enrich light components (low boiling point) in the gas phase and heavy components (high boiling point) in the liquid phase. Its core mechanism includes:
Reflux mechanism: The liquid phase reflux at the top of the tower and the vapor phase reflux at the bottom of the tower provide gas-liquid contact conditions to achieve mass transfer.
Mass transfer driving force: The concentration difference between gas and liquid phases (Δ y, Δ x) drives component transfer, with volatile components diffusing from the liquid phase to the gas phase and non-volatile components transferring in the opposite direction.
Heat transfer: The heat absorption of liquid vaporization is provided by the heat release of steam condensation, forming a thermal equilibrium cycle.
2、 Main components and functions of distillation equipment
Distillation tower body
Structure: Vertical cylindrical body, material selected according to material characteristics (such as stainless steel, ceramic, glass), height ranging from several meters (laboratory) to tens of meters (industrial).
Function: Provide gas-liquid mass transfer space and achieve separation through tower components.
Key components:
Feed inlet: Located at different heights according to separation requirements.
Temperature measurement point and pressure monitoring port: Real time monitoring of the status inside the tower.
Manhole: used for inspection and maintenance.
Separation components inside the tower
Packing tower:
Packing type: Ball ring, wire mesh corrugated packing, etc., providing gas-liquid contact surface area.
Supporting structure: The grid plate and hump support the weight of the filler and allow gas to pass evenly.
Liquid distributor and redistributor: Ensure even distribution of liquid and reduce "wall flow effect".
Plate tower:
Tray types: sieve plate, float valve tray, bubble cover tray, etc. Gas is passed through the liquid layer through sieve holes or float valves to form bubble contact.
Downflow pipe and overflow weir: Connect adjacent trays to control the height and flow of the liquid layer.
auxiliary equipment
Reboiler: Heating the liquid at the bottom of the tower to produce rising steam, providing distillation power.
Condenser: Cool the vapor at the top of the tower into liquid for reflux or product extraction.
Reflux tank and reflux pump: store condensate and control reflux rate to maintain circulation inside the tower.
Feed pump and flow meter: Transport raw materials and monitor flow rate to ensure stable feed.
3、 Design steps for distillation equipment
Process parameter calculation
Determination of separation requirements: Based on the composition of the feed and the purity requirements of the product, calculate the reflux ratio, feed position, top/bottom temperature, etc.
Calculation of theoretical number of tower plates:
Calculate plate by plate alternately using the operating line equation and the vapor-liquid equilibrium equation, or determine the theoretical number of trays through graphical methods.
Actual number of trays=theoretical number of trays/tray efficiency (usually 0.6-0.8).
Feed state optimization: Adjust the feed position based on the thermal condition of the material (cold feed, bubble point feed, etc.) to optimize the separation effect.
Fluid mechanics calculations
Plate spacing and pressure drop: Calculated through software simulation or empirical formulas to ensure smooth gas-liquid flow.
Tower height and diameter: determined based on processing capacity and separation requirements, large towers need to be manufactured and transported in sections.
Selection of tray type: Select sieve plate, float valve plate or packed tower based on material characteristics such as corrosiveness and viscosity.
Strength Calculation and Material Selection
Calculation of tower wall thickness: determined based on pressure, temperature, and medium environment to ensure equipment safety.
Material selection: Consider corrosion resistance (such as stainless steel used for acidic materials), cost, and processing performance.
Assembly drawing: Propose processing requirements, clarify the connection methods and dimensions of each component.
Determination of control plan
Instrument selection: Install pressure sensors, temperature controllers, etc. to achieve real-time monitoring.
Valve control: Control the feed rate, reflux rate, and reboiler heat load through regulating valves.
PID diagram drawing: Draw a process flow diagram with pinch point control to guide operation and maintenance.
4、 Optimization strategy for distillation equipment
Optimization of operating pressure
Under the premise of meeting the cooling conditions of the condenser, using lower operating pressure can reduce the heat load of the reboiler and lower energy consumption.
Reflux ratio and balance of tray number
Increasing the reflux ratio can reduce the theoretical number of trays, but it will increase the load on the condenser and reboiler. The appropriate reflux ratio is the value that minimizes the sum of operating costs and equipment costs (usually 1.2-2 times the minimum reflux ratio).
Adjustment of feeding position and status
Adjust the feed position based on the thermal condition (q value) of the feed and optimize the distribution of plate numbers between the distillation and distillation sections. For example, when the q value decreases, the number of plates required for the distillation section increases, and the feeding position should be moved downwards.
Comprehensive utilization of thermal energy
Utilize the residual heat of steam at the top of the tower to preheat raw materials or provide heating, reducing external energy consumption. For example, in benzene toluene separation, the steam temperature at the top of the tower is relatively high and can serve as a source of heat for low-temperature systems.
5、 Typical application case: benzene toluene separation distillation tower
Design requirements
System: Benzene toluene mixture (toluene 40%).
Processing capacity: 5600 tons/month (raw liquid flow rate of 8000kg/h).
Operating pressure: atmospheric pressure (to avoid increasing equipment costs and separation difficulties due to pressure increase).
Reflux ratio: Take twice the minimum reflux ratio to balance operating costs and equipment costs.
Equipment selection
Tray type: sieve tray tower (simple structure, low cost, reduced pressure, high production capacity).
Heating method: indirect steam heating reboiler.
Coolant: Engineering water (outlet temperature 40 ℃), balancing cooling effect and water consumption.
optimization measures
Thermal energy utilization: The waste heat from the steam at the top of the tower is used for preheating raw materials or heating.
Operational flexibility: Consider changes in raw material concentration and temperature during design to ensure that the equipment adapts to different operating conditions.
