In the field of modern advanced manufacturing, with the continuous deepening of research in photonics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), biochips, and new materials, traditional processing techniques are no longer able to meet the high-precision and high degree of freedom manufacturing needs for complex three-dimensional microstructures. In this context, the 3D Laser Direct Writing System has emerged as a shining pearl in micro nano processing technology. It is like an invisible 'precision carver', capable of freely constructing any three-dimensional structure at the micrometer or even nanometer scale, and is hailed as a key tool for ushering in the future revolution of microfabrication.
What is a 3D laser direct writing system?
The 3D laser direct writing system is an additive manufacturing technology based on the principle of nonlinear optical two-photon polymerization (TPP). Unlike traditional layer by layer printing or photolithography processes, this system uses an ultrafast femtosecond laser beam to focus on the interior of a photosensitive resin, triggering local monomer polymerization through two-photon absorption effect, achieving precise solidification in three-dimensional space from point to point. Due to the fact that sufficient light intensity can only be achieved in the central area of the laser focus to trigger polymerization reactions, complex three-dimensional microstructures can be "written" at any position inside the liquid resin without contacting the material surface.
The entire system typically consists of ultrafast laser sources (such as titanium sapphire femtosecond lasers), high-precision 3D displacement platforms, micro focusing optical systems, automatic control systems, and specialized CAD/CAM software, with a resolution of up to 100 nanometers, far exceeding the traditional optical diffraction limit.
Core technical principle: "Invisible carving" that breaks through the diffraction limit
The essence of 3D laser direct writing lies in its physical mechanism - two-photon absorption. Ordinary photopolymerization relies on single photon absorption, and once light enters the resin, it will trigger continuous reactions along the path, limiting the processing depth and accuracy. However, two-photon absorption requires two photons to be almost simultaneously absorbed by the molecule, and this probability is extremely low, only occurring in the tiny volume with the highest energy density at the laser focus. Therefore, even if the laser beam passes through the transparent resin, only the focal area undergoes polymerization, thus achieving true three-dimensional "voxel level" processing.
This "selective solidification" method enables the system to manufacture complex geometric shapes that traditional processes cannot achieve, such as suspended structures, spiral channels, interlocking gears, biomimetic brackets, etc., without the need for supporting structures, greatly improving design freedom.
Technical advantages: high precision, high flexibility, multifunctional integration:
1. Ultra high resolution: capable of achieving sub micron to hundred nanometer level feature sizes, suitable for cutting-edge research such as photonic crystals, metamaterials, microfluidic chips, etc;
2. True 3D machining capability: not limited by layered manufacturing, supporting direct molding of any angle and surface structure;
3. Strong material compatibility: suitable for various commercial photoresists (such as SU-8, IP series resins) and functional composite materials (including nanoparticles, quantum dots, etc.);
4. Non contact processing: avoids mechanical stress damage and is suitable for brittle or soft materials;
5. Rapid prototyping verification: From design to finished product, it can be completed within a few hours, accelerating the research iteration cycle.
The 3D laser direct writing system has shown great potential in multiple high-tech fields:
-Photonics and integrated optics: used to manufacture photonic crystals, waveguides, micro lens arrays, and metasurfaces, promoting the development of next-generation optical communication and sensing technologies;
-Biomedical engineering: constructing biomimetic tissue scaffolds, cell culture microenvironments, drug delivery carriers to assist in regenerative medicine research;
-Microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip: Printing micro pumps, valves, mixers, and detection chambers to achieve a highly integrated "chip laboratory";
-Micro robots and MEMS: Manufacturing dynamic components such as micro gears, springs, and actuators to provide structural foundations for the movement of micro robots;
-Aerospace and New Materials: Developing lightweight and high-strength lattice structures, topology optimized components, and intelligent responsive materials.
The 3D laser direct writing system is not only a technology for micro nano manufacturing, but also a bridge connecting scientific imagination and real creation. It gives humans the ability to "freely shape" in the microscopic world, opening up infinite possibilities for future technology. With the continuous maturity of technology, this "precision carver" will showcase their talents in more fields, continue to promote the deep integration of optoelectronics, life sciences, and intelligent manufacturing, and write a new chapter belonging to microscale civilization.
