Angiogenesis is a physiological process in which new blood vessels and capillaries are formed and reshaped from pre-existing blood vessels. This can be achieved through budding or division of endothelial cells in blood vessels and capillaries. Vascular cells respond to appropriate stimuli by degrading the extracellular matrix, subsequently inducing endothelial cell proliferation and migration. After undergoing these processes, cells form a tube containing a cavity, a dynamic space that promotes blood flow and exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, and nutrients. Angiogenesis is an important process for growth and development, wound healing, and granulation tissue formation. Angiogenesis and growth also support the invasion of tumor cells in healthy tissues, which is often quantitatively monitored in cancer research. When vascular sprouts extend towards the vascular stimulation source, endothelial cells utilize adhesion molecules for longitudinal migration. These buds then form a ring, utilizing the cells that migrate here to form a complete vascular lumen. The budding process occurs in the body at a rate of several millimeters per day, allowing new blood vessels to grow across the gaps.
