What are the precautions for cleaning and maintaining the interfacial tension tester?
Date: 2025-07-30Read: 0
The cleaning and maintenance of the interfacial tension tester are centered on avoiding residual contamination of the sample, protecting the accuracy of precision components, and ensuring stable measurement data. It needs to be controlled from multiple aspects such as cleaning timing, component handling, and environmental maintenance. Specific precautions are as follows:
1、 Cleaning: Separate component processing to avoid damaging precision structures
The core components of the interfacial tension tester (such as platinum rings/plates, sample cups, sensors) directly affect the measurement accuracy, and targeted operations are required during cleaning:
Platinum Ring/Platinum Plate: Avoid Deformation and Pollution
This is the key sensing component for measurement, and surface cleanliness directly affects the tension value (residual impurities can alter the surface properties of the liquid). Immediately soak in anhydrous ethanol or acetone for 10-30 seconds after use (depending on the nature of the sample, ethanol is used for oil stains, acetone is used for organic matter), then gently brush the surface with a soft bristled brush, and finally rinse with distilled water. Blow dry with nitrogen or air dry naturally.
Do not touch directly with your hands (due to grease contamination). If accidentally touched, it must be cleaned again; Avoid pulling or colliding forcefully to prevent deformation of the platinum ring (roundness and diameter errors of the ring can cause measurement deviation).
Sample cup: prevent cross contamination
After each measurement, empty the sample and clean it with a suitable solvent (such as distilled water for water-soluble samples and petroleum ether for oils). If necessary, use an ultrasonic cleaner (power ≤ 300W) to clean for 5 minutes (to avoid long-term ultrasonic wear on the cup body).
If the sample solidifies (such as high viscosity resin), it can be soaked and softened in a solvent before cleaning. It is forbidden to use a hard tool to scratch the inner wall of the cup (scratches will affect the uniformity of the liquid surface tension).
Instrument surface and mechanical components
Wipe the surface of the device with a dry cloth. If any liquid splashes (such as sample spillage), immediately wipe it with a neutral cleaner and then dry it with a dry cloth (to prevent liquid from seeping into the circuit interface).
Mobile parts (such as sample table lifting rails) should be regularly wiped with a dry cloth to prevent dust accumulation from affecting the lifting accuracy, without the need to apply lubricating oil (to prevent contamination of samples or components).
2、 Regular maintenance: pay attention to precision and stability related components
According to usage frequency (recommended for daily use, monthly maintenance, 1-2 times a week, and quarterly maintenance):
Sensor calibration check: Calibrate every six months using standard liquid (such as 72.8mN/m surface tension of distilled water at 25 ℃). If the deviation exceeds ± 0.5mN/m, recalibrate according to the instructions (some smart models support automatic calibration, manual models need to contact the manufacturer).
Circuit and interface maintenance: Check whether the power cord is damaged, whether there is dust on the data transmission interface (such as USB), and use compressed air to blow away impurities inside the interface to avoid poor contact.
Environmental adaptability maintenance: For long-term use in high temperature (>35 ℃) or high humidity (>80% RH) environments, it is necessary to regularly check whether there is condensation inside the instrument (especially for optical components, such as laser positioning systems of some models), and moisture-proof agents can be placed next to the instrument.
3、 Usage taboos: These behaviors will shorten the lifespan of the instrument
It is forbidden to suddenly cut off power during measurement (which may cause the platinum ring to be pulled off before leaving the liquid level, or data loss). It is recommended to connect a voltage regulator power supply.
Avoid placing the instrument near direct sunlight, vibration sources (such as centrifuges), or strong electromagnetic fields (such as large motors), as these environments can interfere with sensor signals and cause data fluctuations.
When the platinum ring/plate is not in use for a long time (more than 1 month), it should be stored separately in a dry box. The sample cup should be washed and stored upside down. The instrument should be covered with a dust-proof cloth and powered on regularly (once a month for 30 minutes each time) to prevent aging of the capacitor components.
Summary: Cleanliness as the foundation, loss prevention as the key, calibration as a supplement
The maintenance core of the interfacial tension tester is to "protect the cleanliness and integrity of precision components", avoid contamination through timely cleaning, ensure accuracy through regular calibration, and reduce physical damage through standardized operation. Especially platinum rings/plates and sensors are crucial, as any minor contamination or deformation can lead to measurement errors and require extra attention to detail. Doing these things well can not only extend the lifespan of the instrument (which can operate stably for 5-8 years under normal use), but also ensure the reliability of experimental data.
