How to properly store the interface tension measuring device when it is not in use?
Date: 2025-08-29Read: 0

The proper storage of the interfacial tension tester (note: it is speculated that the "measuring instrument" is a pen error) is the key to ensuring its accuracy and extending its service life. When storing, it is necessary to focus on the three core areas of "environmental control, component protection, and system maintenance". The specific operations are as follows:

1、 Core preparation work before storage (key prerequisite)
Equipment cleaning and condition inspection must be completed before storage to avoid residual samples or component damage that may affect subsequent use.
Thoroughly clean the measurement system
Clean the core components of the contact sample: Wipe the platinum ring/platinum plate (surface tension measurement core component), sample cell, and sample stage with anhydrous ethanol or solvent recommended by the instrument to remove residual oil, solvent, or solid impurities, and avoid long-term residual corrosion or contamination of the components.
Clean and air dry: Place the platinum ring/plate and sample cell in a dry and ventilated place to air dry naturally. Do not wipe with paper towels or hard cloths (to prevent scratching the platinum surface and affecting measurement accuracy).
Check the status of key components
Confirm that the platinum ring/plate is not deformed, scratched, or oxidized (if the surface turns black, it needs to be treated with "burning and impurity removal" according to the instructions before storage);
Check if the circuit interface and data cable are intact. If there is any damage, repair it first to avoid further damage caused by moisture during storage.
System reset and power-off
Turn off the power of the instrument host and disconnect the power cord plug;
Reset the measuring mechanism (such as platinum ring/plate lifting arm) to the "initial position" and adjust the sample stage to the lowest position to avoid long-term deformation of the mechanical structure under stress.
2、 Classification and storage requirements for different components
Host and core components (integrated storage)
Cover the main unit with the original dust cover of the instrument (if no clean lint free cloth is available) to isolate dust;
Platinum rings/plates should be fixed on the "special bracket" of the instrument (or placed in a dry special packaging box), and should not be placed randomly to cause deformation;
Auxiliary accessories such as sample tanks and droppers should be classified and placed in a drying oven or sealed box to avoid moisture.
Consumables and accessories (stored separately)
Spare platinum rings/plates should be wrapped in filter paper and placed in a dryer to prevent oxidation and contamination;
Calibration standard substances (such as standard surface tension solutions) should be stored according to their instructions (such as avoiding light, refrigeration, etc.), and the expiration date should be noted.
Software and Data (Backup Protection)
If the instrument is paired with a computer, it is necessary to back up the measurement software and historical data, and turn off the computer power;
Data cables and power cables need to be sorted and stored separately to avoid bending or crushing damage.
3、 Regular maintenance for long-term storage (to be carried out for more than 3 months)
Regularly check the environment: Check the temperature and humidity of the storage environment every month and adjust it in a timely manner (such as using dehumidifiers, air conditioners, etc.).
Drying treatment of components: Check the drying status of platinum rings/plates and sample tanks every 2 months. If moisture is found, they need to be cleaned again and air dried.
Power on maintenance: Power on the instrument once every 3 months (no measurement required) for 30 minutes each time, using the instrument's own heat to dissipate internal moisture and prevent electronic components from aging due to moisture.
Mechanical component maintenance: If the instrument has movable mechanical structures (such as lifting screws), a small amount of special lubricating oil can be applied (according to the instructions) to prevent rusting and jamming.
4、 Taboo (avoid damaging equipment)
Do not store in an unclean state (residual samples may corrode parts);
Do not store instruments near laboratory sinks, under fume hoods, or near chemical reagent cabinets (susceptible to moisture and corrosive gases);
Do not stack heavy objects on instruments or dust covers (to avoid deformation of mechanical structures under pressure);
It is prohibited to dismantle the internal components of the instrument and store it at will (if maintenance is required, it must be operated by professional personnel).
Following the above storage specifications can effectively protect the accuracy of the core components of the interfacial tension tester, ensuring that ideal measurement results can be achieved without frequent calibration during the next use. For specific details, it is recommended to refer to the operating manual of the instrument used (different brands and models may have special requirements).
