A brief introduction to the usage of the anti emulsification tester
Date: 2025-05-31Read: 0
The anti emulsification tester is mainly used to test the ability of lubricating oil to separate from water (i.e. anti emulsification), and is suitable for quality assessment of industrial lubricating oils such as hydraulic oil and turbine oil. The following is a brief introduction to its typical usage method, combined with the operation process, precautions, and result analysis:
1、 Preparation before operation
Instrument and reagent inspection
Confirm that the instrument components are complete, including a constant temperature bath, glass measuring cylinder, stirrer, thermometer, stopwatch, etc.
Prepare samples and distilled water (or deionized water) to ensure that both temperatures are stable at the specified values (such as 40 ℃ or 54 ℃, depending on the standard).
Cleaning and drying
Clean the glass measuring cylinder, mixer, and other parts that come into contact with the sample with petroleum ether or anhydrous ethanol to avoid residual oil stains affecting the test results.
After drying, ensure that there is no residual moisture or impurities.
2、 Operation steps (taking GB/T7305 standard as an example)
Sample mixed with water
Add 40mL lubricating oil sample and 40mL distilled water into the glass measuring cylinder in turn, and pay attention to slowly inject along the cylinder wall to avoid excessive foam.
Immediately place the measuring cylinder into a constant temperature bath (temperature control accuracy ± 0.5 ℃), ensuring that the liquid level is about 25mm below the bath water level, and let it stand for 5 minutes to achieve temperature equilibrium.
stir and mix
Install the mixer so that the bottom of the mixing blade is located at the center of the measuring cylinder, approximately 1.5mm from the bottom.
Start the mixer and stir at a speed of 1500 ± 15r/min for 5 minutes. After stirring is complete, quickly remove the mixer and start timing (stopwatch).
Observation of Separation Process
Let the measuring cylinder stand still, observe the oil-water separation, and record the status at the following time points:
5 minutes: Read the volume of the oil layer, water layer, and emulsion layer (emulsion layer refers to the turbid layer between oil and water layers).
30 minutes: Record the volume of each layer again (some standards require recording up to 60 minutes).
Result judgment: The qualification of emulsion resistance is based on whether the volume of the water layer reaches 38mL or more within a certain period of time (such as 30 minutes) (different oil standards may vary, and specific specifications should be referred to).
3、 Precautions
Key to temperature control
Temperature deviation can significantly affect the separation speed of oil and water, and it is necessary to strictly control the bath temperature according to standards (such as testing the temperature of turbine lubricating oil at 54 ℃ and hydraulic oil at 40 ℃).
Mixing operation specifications
The displacement of the stirring blade position or unstable speed can cause uneven mixing, affecting the emulsification effect, and the stirrer needs to be calibrated regularly.
Avoid external interference
During the static process, avoid vibrating the measuring cylinder and observe with your line of sight level with the liquid surface to reduce reading errors.
safety protection
The sample may contain volatile organic compounds, and the operation should be carried out in a well ventilated environment, avoiding open flames.
4、 Result analysis and data recording
key metrics
Separation time: The time required for oil-water separation to reach a specified volume (such as a water layer of 38mL). The shorter the time, the better the emulsification resistance.
Emulsified layer volume: The smaller the proportion of emulsified layer after standing, the stronger the oil's anti emulsification ability.
Record content
Sample name, number, testing temperature, stirring time, volume of oil/water/emulsion layer at each time point, testing personnel and date, etc.
summary
The operation core of the anti emulsification tester lies in strictly controlling the temperature, standardizing the mixing and settling process, and accurately reading the layered data. Through standardized operations, the stability of lubricating oil under water pollution conditions can be effectively evaluated, providing key basis for equipment lubrication management and oil product selection. In practical use, it is necessary to combine specific oil standards (such as different requirements for steam turbines and hydraulic systems), and regularly calibrate and maintain the instruments to ensure the accuracy of the results.
