Techniques and regeneration methods for extending the service life of gas chromatography consumables
Date: 2025-09-12Read: 1
Gas chromatography (GC) consumables, such as chromatography columns, injection pads, liners, detector nozzles, etc., are crucial for the accuracy of analytical results, but their cost is relatively high. Through scientific use and regeneration treatment, the lifespan of consumables can be significantly extended and operating costs can be reduced. The following are specific techniques and methods:
1、 Tips for extending service life
Column protection
Pre column filtration: Install a protective column or pre column in front of the analytical column to intercept particles and strongly retain components in the sample, avoiding contamination of the main column.
Temperature control: Strictly follow the maximum operating temperature of the chromatographic column (such as 325 ℃ for DB-1 column) to avoid overheating and loss of the stationary phase.
Gradient flushing: After the analysis is completed, rinse the chromatographic column with a high proportion organic solvent (such as methanol) for 10-15 minutes to remove residual samples.
Sample injection system maintenance
Sample pad replacement: Replace the sample pad promptly when there is air leakage or obvious needle marks (usually after 50-100 injections) to avoid sample evaporation or cross contamination.
Lining tube cleaning: After every 50-100 injections, the lining tube is cleaned by ultrasonic cleaning with methanol or acetone to remove tar like deposits; When there is severe pollution, it needs to be replaced.
Detector maintenance
Nozzle cleaning: The FID detector nozzle should be plugged with a fine metal wire or soaked in methanol for cleaning every 200-300 hours.
Shutdown treatment: After the FID is turned off, turn off the hydrogen first and then cool down to prevent nozzle carbon buildup.
2、 Methods for regenerating consumables
Column regeneration
Solvent flushing: For reverse phase chromatography columns (such as C18), rinse with isopropanol water (50:50) or methanol for 24 hours to remove strongly adsorbed impurities.
High temperature aging: Under the condition of 20 ℃ lower than the maximum operating temperature, the chromatographic column is aged with nitrogen for 4-6 hours to restore column efficiency.
Regeneration of graphitized carbon black (GCB) liner
High temperature calcination: Place the used GCB liner in a muffle furnace and calcine at 400 ℃ for 2 hours to remove residual organic matter.
Acid washing treatment: Soak the lining tube in 10% hydrochloric acid for 1 hour to neutralize alkaline pollutants, and then rinse with water until neutral.
Metal component regeneration
Ultrasonic cleaning of nozzle: Immerse the FID nozzle in methanol and sonicate for 10 minutes to remove carbon deposits.
Injection needle passivation: Treat the inner wall of the injection needle with silane reagents (such as BSTFA) to reduce sample adsorption.
3、 Precautions
Regeneration limitations: Consumables that are severely contaminated or physically damaged (such as chromatographic column breakage or nozzle deformation) need to be replaced directly, and the regeneration effect is limited.
Compatibility testing: After regeneration, consumables need to be validated for performance through blank testing or standard samples to ensure the reliability of analysis results.
By standardizing operation and regeneration treatment, the lifespan of gas chromatography consumables can be extended by 30% -50%, significantly reducing laboratory operating costs while ensuring the stability and accuracy of analytical data.
