From Laboratory to Reality: Exploration of Multi Field Applications of SLD Light Sources
Date: 2025-09-17Read: 0
In the fields of optical communication, sensing, and precision measurement, a broadband light source called SLD (Superluminescent Diode) is becoming a core device driving technological progress due to its unique spectral characteristics. It combines the high brightness of lasers with the wide spectral advantages of LEDs, like a "super light bulb", illuminating the application prospects of modern optoelectronic systems.
The luminescence principle of SLD is derived from its special structural design. Unlike ordinary lasers, the optical resonant cavity of SLD is carefully suppressed to avoid the feedback conditions required for laser oscillation, while achieving radiative recombination of electron hole pairs through high current density injection. This design allows photons to undergo one-way amplification during propagation, achieving a far higher optical power density than LEDs while maintaining a wide spectral range of tens or even hundreds of nanometers. The center wavelength of a typical SLD covers the visible to near-infrared wavelength range (such as 850nm, 1310nm, 1550nm, etc.), with low spectral smoothness and short coherence length (usually in the tens of micrometers range). These characteristics make it effective in combating laser interference noise and improving measurement accuracy.
At the technical application level, the value of SLD is mainly reflected in three major areas. Firstly, in fiber optic sensing systems, SLD is the "heart" of fiber optic gyroscope (FOG). Its low coherence can effectively suppress noise sources such as Kerr effect and Rayleigh backscattering, significantly improving the accuracy and stability of gyroscopes, and widely used in high-precision attitude perception scenarios such as aerospace and unmanned aerial vehicle navigation. Secondly, in optical coherence tomography (OCT), the broad spectral characteristics of SLD directly determine the axial resolution of the imaging. At present, medical equipment such as ophthalmic OCT and dermatological OCT commonly use SLD light sources, which can achieve micro scale resolution three-dimensional imaging of living tissues, providing a key tool for early diagnosis of diseases. Thirdly, in the field of optical communication and testing, SLD can be used as a light source for white light interferometers for precise measurement of optical device loss spectra, polarization mode dispersion and other parameters. Its wide spectral coverage greatly improves testing efficiency and accuracy.
With the development of silicon photonics technology and integrated optics, SLD is evolving towards miniaturization, high power, and tunability. By optimizing the quantum well structure and improving the epitaxial process, the output power of the new SLD has exceeded one hundred milliwatts, and the spectral width can be dynamically adjusted through temperature or current. In emerging fields such as wearable medical devices, autonomous driving LiDAR, and quantum sensing, SLD is becoming a key link in breaking through technological bottlenecks due to its irreplaceable spectral characteristics.
From inertial navigation in deep space exploration to non-invasive imaging of human microstructures, SLD broadband light sources use "light" as a pen to depict infinite possibilities on the canvas of technology and industry. In the future, with the deep integration of materials science and photon integration technology, this "super light bulb" will surely light up more innovative applications and continue to push the boundaries of human exploration of the world of light.
