Portable smoke detector: Taking Solman as an example, understand the core principles of smoke monitoring
Date: 2025-10-20Read: 2

Real time monitoring of flue gas composition and parameters is crucial in industrial production, environmental testing, and energy combustion optimization scenarios. Portable smoke detectors have become the core tool for on-site monitoring due to their advantages of "instant measurement and flexible mobility". As an imported brand in this field, Sauermann's product principle design and technical implementation are also representative of the imported portable smoke monitoring field. Today, taking the Solman flue gas analyzer as an example, we will dismantle the core working principle of a portable flue gas analyzer and see how it accurately captures key information in flue gas.

1、 First understand: What is the core task of a portable smoke detector?

Before delving into the principles, we first need to clarify the "core goal" of the Solman flue gas analyzer - it is not simply "collecting flue gas", but to accurately detect the concentration of harmful gases in the flue gas (such as NOx, SO ₂, CO, etc.), combustion efficiency related parameters (such as oxygen content, flue gas temperature, flue gas pressure), and use these data to infer the operating status of the combustion equipment, providing a basis for environmental compliance and energy-saving optimization.

Whether it is daily inspections of boilers and incinerators, or on-site law enforcement by environmental protection departments, Solman portable devices can quickly output reliable data through a closed-loop system of "sampling analysis calculation display", all of which rely on their modular principle design.

2、 The core principle of Solman flue gas analyzer: achieving precise monitoring in four steps

The workflow of the Solman portable smoke detector is essentially a process of simulating human respiration perception judgment. From smoke collection to data output, it can be broken down into four key steps, each with clear technical support.

Step 1: Smoke Sampling - "Introduce the Target Smoke into the Instrument"

To detect smoke, the first step is to safely and interference free introduce the smoke from the flue into the analyzer. Solman adopts a probe based sampling and condensation water removal design to solve the core problem of "difficult treatment of high temperature and high humidity flue gas":

Sampling probe: Solman is equipped with a high-temperature and corrosion-resistant metal sampling probe (usually made of stainless steel), which can be directly inserted into the flue at a specified depth to ensure that the collected flue gas is representative (avoiding only collecting diluted flue gas at the edge of the flue). The probe length can be adjusted according to the size of the flue and adapted to different scenarios.

Condensation dehydration system: After the flue gas is discharged from the flue, the temperature and humidity are high. If it directly enters the detection module, it will damage the sensor and affect the detection accuracy. Solman has a built-in semiconductor condensation module that actively cools down the flue gas temperature to below the dew point, causing water vapor to condense into water, which is then automatically discharged through a drain valve. The final flue gas entering the detection module is "dry and clean", clearing interference for subsequent analysis.

Filtering protection: There are also multi-stage filters in the sampling path that can filter out impurities such as dust and tar in the flue gas, avoiding pipeline blockage or sensor contamination - this is also one of the key designs for the long service life and low maintenance cost of Solman equipment.

Step 2: Gas analysis - "Identify the 'component code' in the flue gas"

This is the "core brain" of the Solman flue gas analyzer, and also the most complex part of the principle. Solman uses the principle of electrochemical sensors to achieve precise detection of multiple components simultaneously for different gas compositions:

Electrochemical sensor: detects "toxic and harmful gases" (such as CO, NO, NO ₂, SO ₂)

Solman's electrochemical sensor principle is based on the "electrochemical reaction between gas and electrode":

When the dried flue gas enters the sensor chamber, the target gas (such as CO) will react with the catalyst on the surface of the working electrode, producing electron transfer;

Electrons flow through an external circuit to the counter electrode, forming a weak current that is proportional to the concentration of the target gas;

The reference electrode is used to stabilize the potential of the working electrode, avoid detection drift caused by environmental factors such as temperature, and ensure data stability.

Taking the common CO sensor in Solman as an example, its detection range can cover 0-10000ppm, with a resolution of 1ppm, which can meet both low concentration leak monitoring and high concentration combustion abnormal scenarios.

Step 3: Auxiliary parameter detection - "Restoring the complete combustion scene"

In addition to gas concentration, the Solman flue gas analyzer also synchronously detects auxiliary parameters such as flue gas temperature, flue gas pressure, oxygen content, etc. These data are key to determining combustion efficiency:

Temperature detection: using thermocouple sensors (such as K-type thermocouples), directly inserted into the flue through sampling probes, can withstand high temperatures of 0-1200 ℃, real-time feedback of flue gas temperature, used to calculate exhaust heat loss;

Pressure detection: By measuring the static/dynamic pressure inside the flue through pressure sensors, it can determine whether the flue is blocked and whether the ventilation is normal, in order to avoid incomplete combustion caused by abnormal pressure;

Oxygen content detection: Most use "electrochemical oxygen sensors" to detect the concentration of O ₂ in the flue gas and infer the "excess air coefficient" of the combustion equipment - a high oxygen content means air waste (increasing energy consumption), while a low oxygen content indicates insufficient combustion (producing more CO). Solman will automatically calculate the combustion efficiency based on the oxygen content, providing a direct basis for equipment adjustment.

Step 4: Data Processing and Display - "Let Data Speak"

After all sensor signals are collected, the built-in microprocessor of the Solman flue gas analyzer will perform three-step processing:

Signal calibration: Combining the built-in "zero calibration" and "span calibration" data of the device (Solman supports manual calibration and automatic calibration, and some models can be calibrated with one click through a calibration gas bottle), correct the errors caused by sensor drift;

Data calculation: Based on detected gas concentration, temperature, pressure and other parameters, automatically calculate derivative data such as combustion efficiency, exhaust heat loss, NOx conversion concentration (converted to 10% oxygen content concentration according to national standards), etc;

Intuitive output: The final data will be displayed in real-time on the device's LCD screen, supporting both numerical and curve forms (some Solman models also support Bluetooth connection to mobile apps for data storage, report generation, and remote sharing), making it convenient for on-site personnel to quickly read and record.

3、 Solman's technological advantages: optimization from principle to experience

After understanding the principle, it is not difficult to find that the advantage of Solman flue gas analyzer is not a breakthrough in a single link, but a "detailed optimization of the entire process":

Strong anti-interference ability: Through design such as condensation dehydration, multi-stage filtration, and dual channel infrared detection, it effectively avoids the influence of humidity, dust, and temperature on detection;

Fast response speed: The T90 response time of the electrochemical sensor (the time to reach 90% of the final reading) is ≤ 30 seconds, meeting the demand for "fast detection" on site;

Balance of portability and durability: The body is made of high-strength engineering plastic, weighing between 350g-825g, equipped with a carrying case and rechargeable lithium battery, with a single battery life of over 8 hours, suitable for complex outdoor and high-altitude environments.

At the end: Principle is the foundation, reliability is the core

The principle of portable smoke detectors may seem complex, but the core logic always revolves around "precise sampling, efficient analysis, and reliable output". Through continuous optimization of sensor technology, sampling systems, and data algorithms, Solman has transformed these principles into products that are "ready to use and have reliable data". This not only provides powerful tools for environmental testing, but also provides data support for energy conservation and consumption reduction in industrial combustion - perhaps the best embodiment of "principle implementation as value".
