summary
What exactly is ash content

Why do different people have significant deviations in the results when using the same method

What is the difference between a programmable ashing furnace and a traditional muffle furnace
This article is based on our 16 years of service experience in material testing laboratories at Zhongwang Technology (covering multiple industries such as chemical fiber, modified plastics, rubber, food, and auxiliary materials), the real experience of frontline engineers, and the standard operating logic of the A8 programmable ashing furnace, providing our laboratory operators with complete knowledge that can be explained in one go.There is a complete operation video at the end of the article

1、 What exactly is ash content?
(Core definitions that experimenters must master)

Ash Content refers to:

The percentage of non combustible inorganic residue remaining after the oxidation and volatilization of all organic matter under specified conditions during high-temperature burning of the sample.
In laboratory projects in which Zhongwang participates, it is often used to determine:
  • Is the purity of the raw material stable
  • Does the production process introduce inorganic impurities
  • Is there any residual filler or catalyst present
  • Does the product meet the standards or customer agreement requirements
Ash content is a seemingly simple but highly dependent indicator of standardized operations.
2、 Why is it easy to make inaccurate ash content experiments?
(Five major sources of error)

1. Inaccurate temperature control (most common)
  • Insufficient ashing temperature → ashing failurefully
  • Heating up too quickly → Sample suddenly ignites and smokes
  • Insufficient insulation time → residual carbon not presentfullyoxidation
The Zhongwang A8 programmable ashing furnace can automatically execute the 1-9 stage heating program

Avoiding temperature differences between different operators.
2. The crucible has not been processed to a 'constant weight'
Failure to complete the "burning cooling weighing" cycle can cause the crucible's own mass to drift.
3. High moisture content or insufficient mixing of the sample
水分
It will push up m ₁, resulting in a lower final ash content.
4. Ashing notfully
Typical manifestations:
  • Blackening of ash content
  • There are black charcoal dots
  • Ash content is flaky or uneven
At this point, it should be re ashed according to the procedure.
5. Improper weighing
The most common problems encountered by Zhongwang engineers on site include:
  • The crucible has not been cooled to room temperature in the dryer
  • The analytical balance is not stably positioned horizontally
  • Sample moisture absorption
  • Static electricity and airflow interference in weighing
These seemingly minor issues are actually the root cause of poor reproducibility in most experiments.
3、 Standard Operating Procedure for Ash Content

① Crucible pretreatment (to achieve "constant weight")
1. Clean the crucible
2. Burn in A8 ashing furnace (such as 550 ℃)
3. Place it in a dryer for cooling
4. Weighing mass m ₀
5. Repeat until the quality difference meets the standard requirements (such as ≤ 0.3 mg)
The maximum temperature of A8 ashing furnace is 1100 ℃, which can meet the pre-treatment requirements of crucibles for different materials.
② Weigh the sample
  • Place the constant weight crucible on the balance
  • Add the mixed sample (1-5 g, according to the standard)
  • Spread flat
  • record:
M ₁=crucible+sample
Reminder: The repeatability of ash content should be prioritized from the perspective of "weighing standards".
③ Pre ashing (applicable to samples prone to smoking)
Slowly carbonize in low-temperature areas (such as 250 ℃) to reduce sudden combustion and furnace pollution.
④ Formal ashing: put into A8 and set up the program
Typical operation (schematic):
Room temperature → 250 ℃ (carbonization stage)
Maintain a constant temperature for 20-30 minutes
250 ℃ → 550 ℃ (ashing stage)
Constant temperature for 1-2 hours
auto cooling
The A8 ashing furnace supports multi-stage program heating, one click program calling, and synchronous processing of 6 crucibles.
This significantly reduces the reliance of traditional muffle furnaces on operator experience.
⑤ Ashing completed → cooling → re weighing
technological process:
1. Natural cooling after ashing is completed
2. Take out the crucible and immediately put it into the dryer
3. Cool to room temperature
4. Weighing: m ₂=crucible+ash content
If the ash color is abnormal, it should be ashed again.

4、 Ash content calculation formula
(The most frequently checked knowledge points in the laboratory)

Standard formula:

meaning:
  • M ₀: Constant weight mass of crucible
  • M ₁: crucible+sample quality
  • M ₂: crucible+ash mass
Kind Reminder:
  • At least two parallel samples are required
  • The result difference should meet the standard repeatability requirements
  • A high-precision balance is required for samples with extremely low ash content
5、 Why are more and more laboratories switching to A8 programmable ashing furnaces?

1. Programmed heating to avoid human error
Traditional muffle furnace:
  • Every time the temperature is set, it depends on experience
  • The heating speed is difficult to be consistent
  • Easy to encounter "inconsistent testing among different people in the same batch"

A8 programmable ashing furnace:
  • Support 1-9 program segments
  • Can store commonly used programs
  • One click call, high consistency across teams
2. High temperature uniformity and better ashingfully
Furnace structure
+
temperature control algorithm
Determine the stability of the ashing effect.

The temperature fluctuation of A8 is smaller, which is more conducive to clearly judging whether it is ashingfully

.

3. Support synchronous processing of multiple crucibles (high batch efficiency)
It can process 7 samples at once, suitable for daily large-scale quality inspection scenarios.
4. Meet multiple national standard requirements (key compliance capabilities)
Applicable standards include: GB/T 9345.1-2018, GB/T 9345.2-2008, GB/T 9345.4-2008, GB/T 9345.5-2010
T/CPIF 0150-2021、T-PSTM 0004-2021、GB/T 30923、GB/T 2914、GB/T 79345.1。
This is the core advantage of laboratory auditing and comparative verification.

5. Paired with F1 rapid cooler to improve turnover efficiency
According to the data, F1 can move the crucible from 850 ℃ to 50 ℃ in just about 15 minutes.
For laboratories with high daily inspection volume, the efficiency improvement is very significant.

6、 The real difficulty of ash content experiment is "stability"

The most difficult part of ash content determination is not technology, but:

Can the temperature control be stable

Is the operation consistent

Is ashing possible
fully

Is the weighing standardized
The value of A8 programmable ashing furnace lies in:
Transform experiments that heavily rely on "experience" into experiments that rely on "systems".
Make ash content determination more stable, safe, and efficient.
