Scanning probe microscope is a high-precision characterization tool widely used for surface morphology and physical property analysis at the nanoscale. Its core components (such as probes, scanners, feedback systems, etc.) are sensitive to the environment and have strict operational requirements, making them prone to various malfunctions during use. The following are analysis and solutions for common faults, covering mechanical, electrical, software, and environmental factors.
1、 Image anomaly fault
1. Blurred or noisy image
-Possible reasons:
-Probe contamination or wear (such as sample particle adhesion, probe aging);
-Improper scanning parameter settings (such as high gain, fast scanning speed);
-Environmental vibration or electromagnetic interference;
-The sensitivity of photodetectors (such as four quadrant detectors) decreases.
-Solution:
-Clean or replace the probe, check if the sample surface is flat and clean;
-Optimize scanning parameters (reduce scanning speed, adjust gain or feedback ratio);
-Check the isolation system (such as vibration isolation table, airbag shock absorber) and keep it away from interference sources such as motors and magnetic fields;
-Calibrate the optical path or replace the detector.
2. Periodic stripes or distortions appear in the image
-Possible reasons:
-Nonlinear response or creep of piezoelectric scanner;
-The distance between the probe and the sample is too large or too small (such as the probe colliding with the sample in contact mode);
-Feedback loop delay or parameter imbalance.
-Solution:
-Perform calibration procedures for piezoelectric ceramics (such as open-loop/closed-loop calibration);
-Adjust the working point of the probe (such as adjusting the eyepiece height or laser position);
-Optimize feedback parameters (such as proportional gain, integration time).
2、 Probe related faults
1. Frequent probe damage or imaging failure
-Possible reasons:
-Probe installation angle deviation or unstable fixation;
-There are sharp particles or contaminants on the surface of the sample;
-Probe aging (such as cantilever beam fatigue, coating detachment).
-Solution:
-Use an optical microscope to check the installation status of the probe, ensuring that the cantilever beam is parallel to the scanning axis;
-Clean the surface of the sample (such as ultrasonic cleaning, nitrogen blowing);
-Regularly replace the probe (especially after prolonged use).
2. Abnormal probe oscillation (non-contact mode)
-Possible reasons:
-The Q value of the probe decreases (such as adsorbing water or gas molecules);
-Excitation signal frequency offset resonance peak;
-Unstable environmental pressure (such as air flow interference).
-Solution:
-Place the probe in a dry environment (such as vacuum or inert gas protection);
-Readjust the excitation frequency to the resonance peak;
-Seal the sample chamber to reduce airflow interference.
3、 Mechanical and motion control failures
1. The scanner cannot be initialized or the moving card is stuck
-Possible reasons:
-Failure of piezoelectric ceramic driver (such as high-voltage polarization breakdown);
-Excessive frictional resistance of the scanning axis (such as insufficient lubrication of the slide rail);
-Controller signal interruption or communication error.
-Solution:
-Test the capacitance value of piezoelectric ceramics and replace damaged drivers;
-Clean and lubricate the linear slide rail, check the mechanical limit;
-Restart the controller or check the data cable connection.
2. Sample stage positioning offset or drift
-Possible reasons:
-The mechanical fixation of the sample stage is loose;
-Thermal drift (sample or device expansion caused by environmental temperature fluctuations);
-Closed loop feedback calibration failed.
-Solution:
-Tighten the screws of the sample table and use low-temperature adhesive to assist in fixing;
-Stabilize laboratory temperature (within ± 1 ℃) and avoid direct sunlight;
-Perform sample stage calibration procedures (such as grid calibration).
4、 Electrical and signal faults
1. Laser spot offset or insufficient intensity
-Possible reasons:
-Laser diode aging or power attenuation;
-Optical path deviation (such as mirror angle deviation);
-The detector's receiving hole is not aligned.
-Solution:
-Replace the laser diode or adjust the current to the rated value;
-Adjust the angle of the reflector to focus the light spot on the back of the probe;
-Fine tune the position of the detector to ensure that the center of the light spot coincides with the receiving hole.
2. Feedback signal loss of lock or noise interference
-Possible reasons:
-Low gain of preamplifier or insufficient bandwidth of filter;
-Poor grounding leads to electromagnetic crosstalk;
-The shielded wire is damaged or the joint is oxidized.
-Solution:
-Optimize the parameters of the preamplifier and add a low-pass filter;
-Check the grounding circuit to ensure that the signal ground is separated from the power ground;
-Replace the shielding wire and clean the oxidation joint.
5、 Software and data processing failures
1. Data collection interruption or frame loss
-Possible reasons:
-Insufficient computer memory or low hard disk write speed;
-Error in parameter settings of the collection software (such as mismatched sampling rate);
-USB/data acquisition card communication failure.
-Solution:
-Close irrelevant programs, increase virtual memory or replace SSD hard drive;
-Adjust the sampling rate to match the scanning speed;
-Reinstall the driver or replace the data acquisition card.
2. Abnormal image stitching or 3D reconstruction
-Possible reasons:
-The scanning range exceeds the piezoelectric hysteresis zone;
-Offline processing algorithm parameter errors (such as excessive smoothing, improper threshold settings).
-Solution:
-Segmented scanning of large area samples, using software to correct piezoelectric hysteresis;
-Adjust image processing parameters (such as noise reduction intensity, plane fitting level).
6、 Environmental and operational faults
1. Sample chamber contamination or condensation
-Possible reasons:
-Poor sealing of the sample chamber (such as aging of the rubber ring);
-The temperature difference between the inside and outside causes condensation of water vapor.
-Solution method
-Replace the sealing ring and regularly check the airtightness;
-Preheat the sample chamber to room temperature to avoid rapid heating.
2. Static discharge damages probes or samples
-Possible reasons:
-The sample or probe is not grounded;
-Low environmental humidity (<30%) leads to static electricity accumulation.
-Solution:
-Ensure that the sample stage and probe holder are well grounded;
-Use humidifier or anti-static spray.
