Material selection techniques for stainless steel distillation tower
Date: 2025-12-12Read: 2
Stainless steel distillation towerThe selection of materials directly affects the corrosion resistance, service life, separation efficiency, and operational safety of the equipment. It is necessary to comprehensively judge based on core factors such as material characteristics and working conditions. The following are six key points for material selection, which are easy to quickly grasp:
Select materials based on their corrosiveness
Ordinary neutral/weakly corrosive materials (such as ethanol, acetone and other conventional organic solvents): 304 stainless steel can be selected, which has basic corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness, and can meet the requirements of conventional distillation conditions.
Chlorine containing and weakly acidic/weakly alkaline materials (such as saltwater systems, dilute hydrochloric acid/dilute alkaline solutions): 316/316L stainless steel is preferred, as 316L has a higher molybdenum content and significantly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than 304, making it particularly suitable for distillation systems containing chloride ions.
Strong corrosive materials (such as concentrated acid and strong oxidants): If ordinary stainless steel cannot meet the requirements, duplex stainless steel (such as 2205) or Hastelloy alloy can be used. Duplex stainless steel has both austenitic and ferritic characteristics, with balanced corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Hastelloy alloy can withstand strong corrosive media, but the cost is relatively high.
Determine the brand based on operating temperature and pressure
Low temperature distillation conditions (below -20 ℃): Stainless steel with excellent low-temperature toughness, such as 304L and 316L (low-carbon models), should be selected to avoid the risk of brittle fracture of ordinary stainless steel at low temperatures.
High temperature and high pressure distillation conditions (temperature>400 ℃, pressure>1.6MPa): heat-resistant stainless steel (such as 310S) is preferred, which has higher chromium and nickel content, good high-temperature oxidation resistance and structural stability, and can prevent deformation or corrosion of the tower body under high temperature and high pressure.
Consider material cleanliness requirements
Pharmaceutical and food grade distillation systems (such as pharmaceutical solvent purification and food flavor separation): Food grade 304/316L stainless steel should be selected, and the material surface should be free of impurities, easy to polish, and comply with industry cleanliness standards such as GMP to prevent material contamination.
Electronic grade high-purity material distillation: Ultra high purity stainless steel can be used to reduce the influence of impurity elements in the material on the purity of the material.
Select materials based on the functional differentiation of tower components
Tower shell: Based on overall corrosion resistance and structural strength, 304/316L/duplex steel is selected according to the above materials and working conditions principles.
Tower internals (packing, tray, downcomer, etc.): If the material is prone to scaling or wear, wear-resistant stainless steel (such as 316L+surface hardening treatment) can be selected; If separation efficiency needs to be enhanced, 316L stainless steel precision machined parts with smooth surfaces and smooth flow channels can be selected.
Takeover and flange: It needs to be compatible with the tower material to avoid electrochemical corrosion caused by dissimilar steel welding, while considering the sealing and temperature and pressure resistance of the connecting parts.
Balancing cost and service life
If the working conditions are mild and the materials have no strong corrosion, 304 stainless steel is preferred to control costs; If the corrosion risk is high, it is recommended to choose 316L stainless steel in one step to avoid frequent maintenance and replacement in the later stage, which will increase the overall cost.
For large distillation towers, the "composite plate" scheme can be adopted: the base layer is made of carbon steel to ensure strength, and the cladding layer is made of stainless steel such as 316L to ensure corrosion resistance, balancing cost-effectiveness and anti-corrosion requirements.
Meets industry standards and certification requirements
The selection of materials must meet the corresponding industry standards, such as the GB/T 24511 stainless steel plate standard in the chemical industry, and the GB 4806 stainless steel standard for food contact in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
If export equipment is involved, international standards (such as ASTM, EN) must also be met to ensure that material certification matches project acceptance requirements.
