What is the role of GC chromatography columns in various fields?
Date: 2025-08-21Read: 0
GC chromatographic columnIt is the core component of gas chromatography, which achieves efficient separation of complex samples through the differential interaction between the stationary phase and the mobile phase (carrier gas). It is composed of a column tube, a fixed phase, and two end seals. The material of the column directly affects the temperature resistance and chemical inertness: Quartz columns have become the mainstream material for capillary columns due to their high temperature resistance, with a maximum operating temperature of up to 360 ℃; Stainless steel columns are commonly used for filling columns due to their compressive strength and can withstand pressures of several hundred psi. Fixed phase can be divided into two types: liquid fixed liquid and solid adsorbent. The former is separated by coating on the inner wall of the capillary or the surface of the carrier, while the latter, such as molecular sieves and alumina, directly forms a porous layer (PLOT column), suitable for analysis of gases.
  GC chromatographic columnScope of application:
1、 Environmental monitoring field
The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), pesticide residues, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other pollutants in the environment is an important application scenario for GC chromatography columns.
VOCs analysis: For benzene derivatives (benzene, toluene, xylene), halogenated hydrocarbons (vinyl chloride, carbon tetrachloride), etc. in soil, water, and air, non-polar or weakly polar capillary columns (such as DB-1, SE-30) are commonly used to achieve trace detection through high separation efficiency.
Pesticide residue detection: Organochlorine pesticides (such as BHC, DDT), organophosphorus pesticides (such as DDV, Leguo), etc. are selected based on polarity differences, using medium polarity or polarity columns (such as DB-1701, HP-50+), combined with high-sensitivity detectors (such as electron capture detector ECD) to achieve accurate quantification.
PAH analysis: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (such as naphthalene, fluoranthene, and benzo [a] pyrene) are carcinogenic substances in the environment. Weak polarity capillary columns (such as DB-5 and HP-5) are commonly used to selectively retain aromatic compounds for separation.
2、 Food safety field
Mainly used for the analysis of pollutants, additives, flavor compounds, etc. in food to ensure food quality and safety.
Food additive testing: such as preservatives (benzoic acid, sorbic acid), plasticizers (phthalates, PAEs), etc. Among them, PAEs are commonly separated by medium polarity capillary columns (such as DB-35) to avoid peak tailing caused by strong polarity.
Fatty acid analysis: Saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic acid and linoleic acid) in food need to be derivatized (methylated) and separated using a polar column (such as HP-88). The polar interaction between the stationary phase and fatty acid esters is used to distinguish the carbon chain length and degree of unsaturation.
Analysis of flavor compounds: Volatile aroma components (such as alcohols, esters, aldehydes) in beverages and spices are commonly analyzed using weakly or moderately polar columns (such as DB-WAX, HP-INNOVAX). These columns retain polar compounds moderately and can effectively separate complex flavor components.
3、 In the fields of medicine and life sciences
Used for drug composition analysis, in vivo metabolite detection, biomarker analysis, etc.
Purity and impurity detection of drugs: Raw materials, intermediates, and by-products in chemically synthesized drugs need to be separated by high separation chromatography columns (such as capillary column DB-1 or DB-17) to ensure that the drug purity meets the standards.
In vivo drug concentration monitoring: detection of drugs and their metabolites (such as antibiotics and sedatives) in blood and urine, commonly using polar columns or bonded phase columns (such as HP-5MS), combined with mass spectrometry detectors (MS) to achieve trace analysis and assist in clinical drug dosage adjustment.
Fatty acid and lipid analysis: Lipids (such as triglycerides and cholesterol) in biological samples are derivatized and separated using polar capillary columns (such as SP-2560) for studying biomarkers of metabolic diseases (such as hyperlipidemia).
4、 Petrochemical industry
The composition of petroleum products is complex, and GC chromatography columns are the core tool for component analysis.
Analysis of gasoline and diesel components: Alkanes, olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons in gasoline, long-chain alkanes (C10-C22) in diesel, etc. are commonly separated using non-polar capillary columns (such as DB-1, HP-1), which utilize differences in carbon chain length to determine oil quality (such as octane number, cetane number).
Natural gas analysis: Low carbon hydrocarbons such as methane, ethane, propane, and trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide in natural gas are quickly separated using packed columns (such as GDX series porous polymer columns) or short capillary columns to meet real-time monitoring needs in industrial production.
Analysis of Polymer Monomers and Additives: Monomers (such as vinyl chloride and styrene) and antioxidants (such as BHT) in plastics and rubber are separated using a medium polarity column (such as DB-624) to evaluate product safety.
