As the core equipment for water quality monitoring and industrial emission control, the measurement accuracy of online oil meters directly affects environmental compliance. Regular calibration is a key step in ensuring data reliability. This article systematically outlines the calibration process of online oil meters, covering three major stages: preparation, calibration implementation, and result verification.

1、 Preparation before calibration: dual protection of environment and equipment
1. Environmental condition control
Calibration should be carried out in a constant temperature laboratory with a temperature of 15-30 ℃ and humidity of ≤ 75%, avoiding direct sunlight and strong electromagnetic interference. A certain environmental monitoring station caused calibration data fluctuations of ± 15% due to uncontrolled environmental temperature, far exceeding the allowable error range.
2. Selection of standard materials
According to the measurement range, select national secondary standard oil products (such as n-hexadecane and isooctane mixed solution), and provide a concentration certificate issued by the institution. For the 0-20mg/L range, it is recommended to use three concentration points of 5mg/L, 10mg/L, and 15mg/L for multi-point calibration.
3. Equipment status check
Optical system: Clean the lens with a dust-free cloth and check the light source intensity (replace if attenuation exceeds 20%)
Flow system: Rinse the sampling pipeline with pure water for 30 minutes to ensure no residual oil stains
Data interface: Test the stability of 4-20mA signal output, and the fluctuation should be less than 0.1% FS
2、 Calibration Implementation: Four Step Precise Operation Method
1. Zero point calibration
Inject oil-free air or high-purity nitrogen gas (oil content<0.01mg/L), and record the zero point value after the reading stabilizes. Repeat 3 times and take the average. The zero drift should be less than 0.5% FS.
2. Range calibration
Inject the standard solution in the order of low, medium, and high concentrations, and record the data after stabilizing each concentration point for 10 minutes. Use the least squares method to fit the calibration curve, and the correlation coefficient R ² should be ≥ 0.999.
3. Response time test
The time from injecting the standard solution to reaching a stable display value of 90% should be ≤ 3 minutes. If it exceeds the time limit, check whether there are bubbles or blockages in the flow path.
4. Interference suppression verification
Inject simulated water samples containing 100mg/L suspended solids or 500mg/L salt, and the measurement deviation should be less than 5%, proving that the instrument has anti-interference ability.
3、 Calibration result verification: 3D evaluation system
1. Repetitive testing
The relative standard deviation (RSD) should be less than 2% for 6 consecutive measurements of 10mg/L standard solution. Due to a design defect in the flow path, the RSD of a certain chemical plant reached 4.8%, which was restored to 1.2% after renovation.
2. Labeling recovery rate
Adding standard oil of known concentration to actual water samples should result in a recovery rate between 90% and 110%. For oily wastewater, it is recommended to use isotope labeling method to improve accuracy.
3. Long term stability tracking
After calibration, run continuously for 72 hours, record measurement values every hour, and the maximum fluctuation should be less than 3% FS. A monitoring station has extended the calibration frequency from once a month to once a quarter by establishing a dynamic adjustment model for the calibration cycle.
Strictly following the standardized calibration process from environmental control to data verification can reduce measurement errors to within ± 1%, meeting the requirements of national standards such as HJ637-2018. It is recommended to establish a calibration electronic file to record the batch number of standard substances, environmental parameters, and raw data, providing a complete traceability chain for equipment maintenance and compliance auditing. Let precise measurement begin with scientific calibration and ultimately build an environmental defense line.
