Plastic tensile impact testing machine: a key equipment for accurately evaluating the impact resistance performance of materials
Date: 2025-12-16Read: 1
In modern materials science and engineering applications, plastics are widely used in various fields such as automotive, electronics, packaging, and medical due to their excellent characteristics of light weight, easy processing, and corrosion resistance. However, plastics often face various dynamic loads and sudden impacts during actual use, and their impact resistance directly affects the safety and service life of the product. Therefore, how to scientifically and accurately evaluate the mechanical behavior of plastic materials under impact loads has become a key link in material research and quality control. In this context, plastic tensile impact testing machines play an irreplaceable role as core equipment specifically designed to determine the impact resistance of materials under high-speed tensile conditions.
  1、 What is plastic tensile impact test?
Plastic tensile impact test is a dynamic mechanical testing method mainly used to evaluate the fracture energy, ductility, and toughness performance of materials under high-speed tensile loads. Unlike traditional static tensile tests, tensile impact tests simulate the situation where materials are subjected to high strain rate loads in a very short period of time, which is closer to the sudden impact scenarios that may be encountered in real usage environments, such as car collisions, drop impacts, or stress concentration during high-speed assembly processes.
This test is usually conducted according to international standards by clamping a standard specimen at both ends of the testing machine, applying instantaneous tensile force through a pendulum or pneumatic/electric drive system, recording the energy required for the specimen to fracture, and calculating the tensile impact strength of the material based on this (unit: kJ/m ²).
  2、 Working principle
The plastic tensile impact testing machine mainly consists of an impact drive system, a sample clamping device, an energy measurement system, and a data acquisition and analysis module. Its core lies in achieving high-speed loading of the specimen and accurately capturing the energy changes at the moment of fracture.
Taking the common pendulum type tensile impact testing machine as an example, its workflow is as follows: first, firmly install dumbbell shaped or rectangular plastic specimens that meet the standard size between the upper and lower fixtures; Subsequently, release the pendulum of the preset height and apply instantaneous tensile force to the specimen through the linkage mechanism; When the sample breaks, the pendulum continues to swing to the other side, and its remaining kinetic energy is recorded by an angle sensor or photoelectric encoder; The impact energy absorbed by the sample can be calculated by the difference between the initial potential energy and the remaining kinetic energy.
In recent years, with the development of sensing technology and automation control, the new generation of testing machines generally integrates high-precision force sensors, high-speed camera systems, and intelligent software platforms. They can not only monitor the load displacement curve in real time, but also analyze micro mechanical behaviors such as fracture mode and crack propagation speed, greatly improving the accuracy and information dimension of testing.
  3、 Why is the evaluation of tensile impact performance crucial?
Plastic materials may exhibit good strength under static tension, but may fail due to brittle fracture under high-speed impact. For example, polypropylene (PP) has good ductility at room temperature, but is prone to embrittlement under low temperature or high strain rate conditions; Engineering plastics such as polycarbonate (PC) have excellent toughness, but if formulated improperly or subjected to internal stress, they may also develop microcracks or even sudden fractures under impact.
Through tensile impact testing, engineers can:
Screening for optimal material formulations: comparing the effects of different additives, fillers, or blending ratios on impact performance;
Optimize processing technology: evaluate whether injection molding, extrusion and other molding parameters introduce residual stress or structural defects;
Verify product reliability: Ensure that the end product still has sufficient safety margin under various working conditions;
Meet industry certification requirements: For example, automotive components need to pass specific impact standards before they can be put into mass production.
As an important bridge connecting material research and engineering applications, plastic tensile impact testing machine is not only a conventional equipment in the laboratory, but also a key tool to ensure product quality and safety. In today's world of constantly emerging new materials and increasingly complex application scenarios, only by relying on precise and reliable testing methods can we truly grasp the performance of materials at their "limits" and provide solid support for innovation. With the continuous evolution of technology, this equipment will play a more important role in promoting the high-quality development of the plastic industry.
