Measurement and operation method of Vicat softening point testing machine for knife handle
Date: 2025-11-21Read: 2
The Vicat softening point tester is mainly used to determine the softening point of plastics, rubber, thermoplastic materials, etc. under specific conditions. The Vicat softening point refers to the temperature at which a material softens when heated under a certain load. It is widely used in fields such as plastics, rubber, and building materials, especially in the performance evaluation of materials such as knife handles. The following is the operating method for measuring the Vicat softening point of the tool handle using the Vicat softening point testing machine:
1. Preparation work
Equipment inspection:
Check if the tool holder Vicat softening point testing machine is working properly, ensuring that the temperature control, load, and measurement systems are functioning properly.
Check if the cooling device, heating element, and temperature sensor are working properly.
Clean the equipment to ensure that there are no pollutants affecting the testing.
Sample preparation:
The material of the handle should be cut into suitable sizes according to standard regulations. Generally, the sample is cylindrical or disc-shaped, with a diameter of 6mm and a thickness of 3-5mm (depending on relevant standards or requirements).
If the handle is a multi-layer structure or composite material, it is necessary to ensure that each layer meets the required dimensions and pay attention to its uniformity.
Load selection:
Select the appropriate load based on the characteristics of the material. Common loads include 500g, 1000g, 2000g, etc.
Ensure that the selected load meets the standard regulations or testing requirements to ensure the accuracy of the testing.
2. Sample installation
Place the sample:
Place the handle sample horizontally on the sample table of the Vicat softening point tester, ensuring that the sample is parallel to the heating surface of the heater and evenly heated.
The sample should be aligned with the sensor of the testing instrument to ensure that the temperature sensor can accurately measure the temperature of the sample.
Ensure that the surface of the handle sample is free from damage or defects to avoid affecting the test results.
Insert probe:
Place the pressure needle (probe) vertically in the center of the sample. The needle should make even contact with the surface of the sample to ensure that there is no tilting or unevenness when a load is applied.
3. Setting and Heating
Set the temperature rise rate:
According to standard regulations (such as ISO306, ASTMD1525, etc.), set an appropriate temperature rise rate, generally 50 ° C/h.
Ensure stable heating rate and avoid temperature fluctuations caused by rapid heating affecting test results.
Temperature setting:
Set the starting temperature according to the equipment requirements. Normally, when the testing machine starts heating up, the temperature starts from room temperature (about 23 ° C).
The Vicat softening point tester automatically adjusts the heating power based on the heating rate.
4. Testing process
Start heating:
Start the testing machine, start heating the sample, and record the temperature changes. During the heating process, the temperature will gradually increase and be displayed in real-time on the control panel of the testing machine.
Softening point determination:
The testing machine observes the changes in force on the sample during the heating process. When the sample is subjected to a load, the Vicat softening point tester will monitor the temperature at which the sample undergoes deformation.
The criterion for determining the softening point is to record the temperature when the deformation depth of the sample under load reaches the specified value (such as 1mm or 2mm).
5. Test completion and result recording
Stop heating:
Once the temperature reaches the softening point and records this temperature, stop heating.
Automatically record the softening point temperature.
Cleaning equipment:
After completing the test, clean the sample stage and pressure needle to avoid residue affecting the next test.
Check the status of the instrument to ensure that it is in standby mode and ready for testing the next sample.
6. Result analysis and reporting
Record softening point:
Record the softening point temperature of the sample, usually in degrees Celsius (° C).
If multiple sample tests are conducted, ensure that the softening point of each sample is accurately recorded.
data analysis
Compare the softening point temperatures of different samples and evaluate the thermal stability of the handle material.
Based on the test results, determine whether the material meets the design or usage requirements.
Precautions
Temperature control: Ensure a smooth heating rate and avoid inaccurate results caused by rapid heating.
Sample uniformity: The surface of the sample is flat and the thickness is uniform, avoiding deviations during deformation testing.
Load selection: Select an appropriate load and adjust it according to the hardness of the material.
Equipment calibration: Regularly inspect and calibrate the Vicat softening point testing machine to ensure accurate measurement.
Environmental control: The testing environment should be kept stable to avoid the impact of excessive temperature fluctuations on the results.
Reference standards
ISO306: Determination of Vicat softening point of plastics
ASTMD1525: Plastic Vicat Softening Point Test Method
Through the above steps, you can accurately determine the Vicat softening point of the handle material and evaluate its thermal stability.
