Gilson pipette tip installation guide: Three steps to unlock the "golden partner" for precise experiments
Date: 2025-12-17Read: 1
In molecular biology experiments, the sensitivity of PCR amplification, the repeatability of ELISA detection, and the precise addition of samples in cell culture... The accuracy of each operation cannot be achieved without the tacit cooperation between the pipette and the pipette tip. As a "precise sampling tool" in the laboratory, the correct installation of the suction head of the Gilson pipette is the first step to ensure the reliability of experimental data. This article takes the Gilson pipette as an example to explain in detail the installation techniques of the suction head in three steps, helping you easily master this basic but crucial experimental skill.
  Step 1: Select the correct suction head model and match the range of the pipette
The matching of Gilson pipette and suction head should follow the principle of "range correspondence":
1. Range: The nominal range of the pipette should be consistent with the suction head capacity.
2. Color identification: Gilson suction tips are usually distinguished by different colors according to their capacity, which can quickly assist in selection.
3. Material compatibility: If the experiment involves organic solvents or high-temperature sterilization, polypropylene (PP) material filter tips should be selected to prevent corrosion or cross contamination.
Case warning: A laboratory mistakenly used a 200 μ L pipette tip with a 100 μ L pipette, resulting in a deviation of 15% in the amount of liquid aspirated, directly affecting the repeatability of Ct values in qPCR experiments.
  Step 2: Gently press vertically to avoid "violent installation"
1. Handheld pipette: Hold the middle of the pipette with your thumb and middle finger, lightly touch the button with your index finger, and keep the instrument perpendicular to the desktop.
2. Align the suction head: Gently insert the lower cone of the pipette into the suction head, ensuring that the centers of the two are aligned.
3. Apply pressure evenly: Use your index finger to lightly press the top button of the pipette to the second gear (discharge gear), feel the slight resistance between the suction head and the cone, hold the pressure for 1-2 seconds, and then release.
  Step 3: Check after installation to ensure seamless integration
1. Visual inspection: Observe whether the connection between the suction head and the pipette cone is flat, without gaps or offsets.
2. Functional testing:
Liquid absorption test: immerse the liquid vertically, slowly release the button to the first gear (liquid absorption gear), and observe whether the liquid level rises steadily;
Drain test: Place the suction head tightly against the container wall, gently press the button to the second gear, and check if all the liquid is drained and there is no residue.
  Advanced skills:
If using a filter cartridge suction head, gently tap the bottom of the suction head after installation to remove any air bubbles inside the filter cartridge;
When installing a multi-channel pipette (such as 8-channel or 12 channel), it is necessary to check the sealing of each channel's suction head one by one.

  Conclusion: Details determine the success or failure of an experiment
From the selection of the Gilson pipette tip to installation inspection, every step of the operation is related to the accuracy of the pipette. The precise combination of the Gilson pipette and suction head not only improves experimental efficiency, but also safeguards data reliability. Mastering the correct installation method can upgrade your liquid transfer operation from "manual" to "intelligent", providing solid technical support for scientific research exploration.
