What materials are commonly used for 2.5 dimensional probes
Date: 2025-07-28Read: 1

The full-automatic 2.5-dimensional measuring instrument is a device that realizes the limited measurement of height direction (Z-axis) by adding probes or laser sensors on the basis of the traditional anime image measuring instrument (two-dimensional plane measurement). Its core functions include the composite measurement of planar geometric dimensions (such as angle, diameter, radius, spacing), geometric tolerances (parallelism, perpendicularity), and simple 3D profiles. The equipment captures the image of the workpiece through a high-resolution CCD camera, and combines it with a precision displacement control system and intelligent analysis software to complete automated detection.

2.5 dimensional probes generally use materials such as ruby, silicon nitride, zirconia, and measuring tips.
The common material for measuring balls is ruby, as ruby is currently one of the hardest materials known. Ruby balls have good surface smoothness, as well as excellent compressive strength and collision resistance.
Only in rare cases is it not suitable to use ruby balls. In the following two situations, it is recommended to use measuring tips made of other materials:
The first method is to scan workpieces made of aluminum material under high strength. The main reason is the attraction of the material, based on a phenomenon called "adhesive wear" that occurs during the touch testing process. In this case, a better choice is silicon nitride.
The second scenario is to perform high-intensity scanning on cast iron workpieces, which will cause "wear" on the surface of the ruby. In this case, it is recommended to use zirconia balls.
Silicon nitride has many characteristics similar to ruby. It is a very hard and wear-resistant porcelain that can be processed into high-precision balls and highly polished on the surface. Silicon nitride and aluminum materials are not attractive, so there will be no wear that occurs on ruby balls. However, silicon nitride exhibits significant wear when scanning steel surfaces, so its application is best defined as measuring aluminum. Measurement.
Zirconia balls are a particularly tough ceramic material with hardness and wear resistance close to ruby. Based on their surface properties, they are an ideal choice for scanning the surface of steel workpieces.
