Accurate Selection Guide for Conductivity Instruments in Ultra Pure Water Systems
Date: 2025-11-19Read: 0

In ultra pure water (resistivity ≥ 18.2 M Ω· cm) systems, the selection of conductivity meters directly affects the accuracy of water quality monitoring and the reliability of system operation. Improper selection can lead to data distortion, frequent maintenance, and even affect the quality of end products. This article provides a complete selection strategy to ensure that instrument performance matches the characteristics of ultrapure water. For reference only-

1、 Addressing the core challenges of ultrapure water measurement

Ultra pure water poses three major challenges for measurement due to its unique physical properties:

Low conductivity: The theoretical value is 0.055 μ S/cm, requiring the instrument to have high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio

Highly pollution sensitive: Exposure to air absorbs CO ₂, and conductivity can increase by 0.1 μ S/cm per minute

Significant temperature effect: Each ℃ temperature change can cause a reading deviation of 1-2%

2、 Five core elements for selection

1. Electrode technology: four electrode type

Technical advantage: Overcoming the polarization effect of the dual electrode system through independent current and voltage electrodes

Range matching: Ensure coverage in the range of 0.01-100 μ S/cm, with a resolution of 0.001 μ S/cm

Electrode constant: A dedicated low conductivity electrode with K=0.01 cm ⁻¹ must be selected

2. Temperature compensation: requires dual parameter display

Precision Sensing: Integrated PT1000 temperature sensor with an accuracy of ± 0.1 ℃

Dual display function: Simultaneously display temperature compensation value (@ 25 ℃) and actual measurement value, making it easy to distinguish between real pollution and temperature fluctuations

3. Measurement pool design: closed flow type

Structural requirement: Use fully enclosed 316L stainless steel or PTFE material flow pool

Connection method: Sanitary grade clamp or quick fit connector to ensure zero dead zone

Flow rate adaptation: Design flow rate of 1-3 L/min to avoid bubble retention

4. Signal and Integration: Digital Output

Output protocol: Supports digital communication such as Modbus and Profibus to avoid accuracy loss of 4-20mA analog signals

Self diagnostic function: intelligent warning for electrode status monitoring, calibration expiration reminder, etc

5. Materials and Certification

Liquid receiving material: Platinum or titanium alloy electrode is selected, and 316L stainless steel+PTFE seal is preferred for the flow cell

Industry certification: Semiconductor industry needs to meet SEMI F72 standard, pharmaceutical industry needs to comply with FDA 21 CFR Part 11

4、 Special requirements for operation and maintenance management

Calibration standard: Establish a mandatory calibration system with a three-month cycle using NIST traceable 84 μ S/cm and 1413 μ S/cm standard solutions.

Online cleaning: Integrated CIP/SIP function, able to withstand 121 ℃ and steam sterilization for 30 minutes, equipped with ultrasonic cleaning interface to deal with biofilm contamination.

Data integrity, audit trail function records all operation logs, electronic signature supports data compliance.

5、 Recommended selection process

Confirm the measurement range and accuracy requirements, and select the appropriate electrode constant (K=0.01). Determine the installation method and flow pool structure, evaluate the output signal and system integration requirements, verify material compatibility and industry certification.

In the world of 18.2 M Ω· cm ultrapure water, every micro Siemens change is crucial. Through scientific selection methods, conductivity meters will be upgraded from simple measurement tools to decision-making basis for process optimization, providing reliable water quality assurance for manufacturing and scientific research.
