What should be noted when using Karl Fischer reagent?
Date: 2025-08-25Read: 0
Karl fischer reagentIt is a chemical reagent specifically used for precise determination of trace moisture in substances, widely used in the detection of moisture content in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, petroleum and other fields.
Karl fischer reagentThe determination principle is based on the oxidation-reduction reaction between iodine and sulfur dioxide, which requires a quantitative amount of water to participate. Under the action of alkaline substances such as pyridine or imidazole and solvents such as methanol, the reaction can proceed quantitatively, thereby achieving accurate determination of moisture.
Advantages:
1. Strong specificity: highly selective towards water and not affected by other substances.
2. High accuracy: capable of measuring moisture content at the microgram level, suitable for measuring moisture content at the ppm level.
3. Widely applicable: Suitable for the determination of various types of samples such as gases, liquids, solids, etc.
Precautions for use:
1. Security protection:
Methanol and pyridine are toxic and flammable, so protective gloves and goggles should be worn during operation to avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. Operate in a well ventilated environment to prevent inhalation of toxic gases.
2. Reagent storage:
Karl Fischer reagent should be stored in a sealed container to avoid deterioration caused by contact with moisture in the air.
Store in a cool and dry place, away from sources of fire and heat.
3. Calibration and Calibration:
The titration degree of the reagent will change over time and needs to be calibrated regularly to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.
Pure water or standard water samples can be used as reference materials during calibration.
4. Sample processing:
Before measurement, the sample needs to be appropriately processed, such as dissolution, dilution, etc., to meet the measurement requirements.
Avoid substances in the sample that react with Karl Fischer reagent, otherwise specialized reagents or methods should be used.
